I have an IBM 2198-XX7 and the motherboard is a 80U (that's IBM's own motherboard.) The processor I'm running now is a 733 Pentium 3 Slot 1 and with 133 FSB. Now my question is will I be able to upgrade to a 933 Pentium 3 Slot 1 with an 133 FSB? I've contacted IBM about this dilemma, and all they said was, "IBM does not deal with third party hardware or software, other than the stuff that came with your computer." If you ask me they're kinda jerks. The thing is I'm pretty sure it would be able to handle it, but I just want to make sure before I buy it. My SiSoft Sandra says this about the processor upgrade,

"Mainboard Upgradeability
Socket/Slot CPU
Upgrade Interface Slot 1/A
Supported Speed(s) 933MHz (or more)
Supported Voltage(s) 1.8V"

Also the processor I'm looking at meets the voltage range, it's 1.6-1.7V, just like the 733. Well I don't know, so if anyone can help and tell if for sure it will work please help, cause like I said, I'm pretty sure it would?

Thank you,
Mike

Your motherboard should be able to handle up to a 1GHz processor, but you should download and flash the BIOS for the best performance and stability.

Check the IBM website for details.

Check here for flash instructions:

Go to IBM's website. Try to find some schematics on your motherboard. See if there are multiplier jumpers to get you up to 933. If not, its possible your mobo autodetects the processor.

Well, I've already flashed it once before, and that is currently up to date, I checked that. Then about the jumpers, well, I've already looked for those in a manual and the board itself, but it says nothing, and yes, I do think it auto-detects. Hmm...I don't know.

Well I just found this from IBM "Processor Speed Settings: Processor speed for the PC 300 type 6563, 6564, 6574 and Aptiva type 2178/2198 computers are fixed and are determined by the processor. There are no settings required," does this mean that a processor upgrade would be auto-detected?

To me it sounds like it reads the ID off the processor and sets itself accordingly. I would bet, if your motherboard chipset offically supports a 933, that IBM didn't od anything to negate that. I mean, if I upgraded a Compaq, I wouldnt' think IBM would be any more proprietary.

Is true...I can't lie about that.
