I just purchased a new computer with an AMD K6-2 400 Mhz and 56K modem. My connection is only getting 28800...sometimes 26400. My neighbor 2 blocks away says he gets 44???

This is as slow as my old 75 Pentium/14K modem on loading pages. Any ideas?

I just discovered this site tonight. It looks like I'll be visiting often!

What brand/model of modem do you have?

Welcome to SysOpt! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Go to Control Panel >Modems. Highlight your modem and click on Properties. Make sure Maximum Speed is set to match the Modem.

I guess I can't reply to an individual post on this site.

Dominus, where do I look to see this? I have Windows 98.

Roy, Do you mean dialing properties? I see no spot for speed.

Guess I'm showing you how dumb I am. Thanks for the welcome!

Perhaps your ISP doesn't support KFlex or V.90; it's very unlikely, but possible. Otherwise, it could be the quality of your phoneline causing the lack of connect speed.
The only advice I could give would be to get the latest drivers for your modem, or have your Phone Co. check the line for interferance.

Also, call your ISPs support line and see what protocols they support. Also ask if there are any special problems they have regarding that particular brand. Happened to me once.

Being this is a new computer I assumed all the drivers were in place. Being my neighbor is getting 44??? off his I assumed that my phone company line was okay. My ISP is my phone company. I'll ask my neighbor what brand he has. That seems to be the only option unchecked.

Thank you for being so patient with me!

Don't suspect that the company you bought that comp off of bothered to get all the newest drivers for your components. Most don't bother. Check the modem manufacturer's site for the latest. They can make a difference.

My guess is that your phone lines cannot handle V.90 speeds. Take your computer over to your friend's house, and I bet you get 40+ connections as well. Bring his computer to your house, and I be he gets 28.8 too.
In terms of phone lines, 2 blocks may as well be the other side of the world. He may be on a completely different switching system than you. You may have more than 1 A-D switch between you and your ISP, where he may have a direct line.

I was getting some pretty crappy connect speeds too- A friend suggested I get some of the newer phone services (call forward, caller ID etc.) The reason for this is older switching stations have older wire and older equipment in them. That equals bad line speed. The newer switches have higher capacities and better (later technology) equipment. so I signed up for caller ID they put my service to the new switch in my 'hood
and I went from 24,400bps line speed to 45,300 connects everytime now. Really did the trick.
3 weeks later I cancelled the caller ID service- Once you are on the newer switch they don't bother to take you off of it. Its a done deal.
Good luck!

New computers always seem to have a few bugs in them, download the drivers, check the results. I've had a lot of trouble with 56k modems, especially so called "Win Modems" which use your computers processor instead of a seperate processor on the modem. I've tried all this stuff and have gone through 3 modems in the process (note: my phone line, computer, ISP, modem is fine, I called all the companies) Also, I don't know much about modem companies but is this a cheap brand? From experience, you get what you pay for. Sometimes cheaper brands will not work as well...Oh well in a few months my area will have ADSL, until then I'm surfing at 33.6k
Trying to find a 56k that works,
