Compaq 4508

I am working on my sisters compaq 4508 1997 vintage PC. It has 24MB ram. I put 32mb sdram in it and it would not find it! Does this PC need "special" compaq memory? I was at the web site for this PC and it stated that this pc can only take 48mb max!!!!
This PC has 16mb built in the mobo & an 8mb dimm installed.
They cannot afford to get a new PC so more memory is the only answer right now. Any suggestions?

Many of the older Compaq systems used special RAM chips.
