I will getting a new computer but I don't know what operating system to get. I will be using it to type simple documents, internet browsing, and mp3s, so I won't need any "professional" versions. Which should I get?

if you want something simple...just go with win98SE....it's pretty stable and you won't have any imcompatibility issues as you would with WIN XP.

Good Luck

Get XP Home addition. You'll love the Fisher Price look and feel.

Seriously, Windows 2000 would suite you just fine and it's WIDELY supported now.

If you're getting a new PC, then you won't have to worry anyway about the XP compatibility issues. I say go for XP. It's far more stable than 9x and it's more fun to play with.

Windows XP is less compatible with hardware than 2000 as you sometimes have to use 2000 drivers for XP. Also, no more games are supported than 2000, and the XP O/S is just **** anyway. Go for 2000 every time.

Actually Windows XP and Windows 2000 are based on Win. NT 4.0 So they both have the compatibility with hardware and software. The bad thing is that games that can't run with NT won't run with XP or 2000

And people who think windows XP is **** because of what it looks like are stupid. You pick which one you want by how stable and reliable the OS is. Also by what it can do. I have had Wins XP since the first day it came out and I havn't had ANY problems with it. No crashes or lock up, no incompatibily with games, other software, or hardware. And I'm only running on a Pentium II.

Your wrong about NT and XP/2000. XP/2000 where built on 2000 platform with NT security.

Win2000 is what MS was going to release as NT 5. It is essentially based on NT 4 with Plug and Play and improved Multi-Media support. XP is the next step along the same line. NT 4, Win2000, and Win XP have the same relationship to each other as Win95, Win98 and WinME.

Don't think about that if you want XP

Get XP pro or home. They are very customizable so you don't have to settle for " fisher price look and feel ". :)

You can download the Application Compatibility Toolkit for Windows 2000 free at microsoft.com. This clears up some problems with the odd game by fooling the game into thinking it's running on Win95/98.

for gaming get Win 98SE
for general work get Win 2k

In my opinion its too early to get win xp , just wait till at least the first service pack comes out.

As I said before, Windows 2000 is fine for gaming, and is a better choice than Win98SE, as a friend of mine has 98SE and it's continually crashing and having problems, while both of my 2000 machines work well and don't crash.
