I am SO sad. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Hopeful,, is what I was.

A NEW O/S from the most Honorable Bill Gates had me quivering with excitement, joyful that the world would finally see PEACE.

I supported Bill and his New Hummer by doing the Right thing, Buying TWO discs of ME.

Ole Bill has let us down. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

The problems with ME are both difficult and numerous. (no pun intended)

The problems with IE are NOT resolved with the latest ver of 5.5 (5.50.41.34.0600)

The system information is cut down, so that you cannot see "system resources" any more.

System File Checker is either Gone or Hidden so that you cannot easily replace damaged dll's or exe's .

The ability to use I.E. for photo viewing easily by scrolling back and forth is GONE.

If anyone can see an improvement in speed, It most certainly is not at My house.

My old, but faithful HP Pavillion now screaming at 366mhz w/75mhz FSB will SMOKE this 433 intel Celery, BADLY.

Boot times are more than double on the Celery compared to the HP. Yes, the SAME programs are loading in msconfig.

On shut-down, the w98 HP politely clicks, OFF.

The one with ME, just hangs,,, mostly after re-start we get the joy of watching SCANDISK.

Shall we have a moment of silence for this very young, but quite DEAD os,,,, known to the world as Windows Millennium Edition.....

I'm sorry to hear you say that.

I'm finding ME to be an extremely stable OS. I haven't seen an error message of any kind for over a week, though a game locked up on me once.

However, I know this may seam odd, I had a quite a few issues with it at the beginning that have seamed to just...fade away. Such as the inability to successfully restart and shut down.

Viewing images with IE instead of image preview is a quick fix...just right click on any jpg of gif or whatever...go into properties and change the opens with option.

System Resources is under the performance tab of system properties.

System File Checker is now System File Protection (PCHealth)...and lots of info about it can be found here (http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/psssearch.asp?SPR=msall&T=B&KT=ALL&T1=7d&LQ=Q253571&S=F&A=T&DU=C&FR=0&D=support&LPR=&LNG=ENG&VR=http%3A%2F%2Fsupport.microsoft.com%2Fsup port%3Bhttp%3A%2F%2Fsupport.microsoft.com%2Fservic edesks%2Fwebcasts%3Bhttp%3A%2F%2Fsupport.microsoft .com%2Fhighlights&CAT=Support&VRL=ENG&SA=GN&Go.x=27&Go.y=15)

You may find some of your problems dissipate as more ME specific drivers are written.

EDIT

I just noticed...It looks like you can restore a file from MSCONFIG. The Extract button under General.

That thing with not being able to view images with explorer as default is ****, I don't know why they changed it. But on my machine, it boots into WinME faster than 98, I've had virtually no crashing, and all games work a treat. IE has never given me problems, so I can't complain about that, but I hate it how windows scan-disk runs at startup after a bad reboot, I hate windows scan-disk, but I think you can turn that piece of **** off. The way they changed things around is a bit **** as well, but overall, it is better than win98, and I say just give it a bit of time to get used to the changes.

Hmm, that URL didn't work, and C&P isn't working either....

If it doesn't work for you, go to the MS Knowlege base (http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb) and do a search (all products) for "Q253571"

AHHHH!!! That UBB/edit bug is annoying!!!!!

Win NOT M E is stable for some and a POS for others. It crashed on me more than 98 did so I said goodbye to the 9X kernel.

Doc have you tried W2K yet?

While I haven't had nearly the problems you have encountered Doc......I too found ME to be a letdown, and have reverted back to Win98SE for now.

At one of my local Pewter shops, a very bright young technician who I converse with oftem, just Today said He also removed ME.

The benchmarks he observed were faster boots, BUT the programs HE runs averaged 30% SLOWER(admittedly using very rough calculations).

He also was unimpressed with the general layout and functionality.

My problems with WinME have been so numerous that I am also thinking of reverting to Win98. Thank god I have a backup image of my HDD with Win98. It would be nice if MS would release some patches for ME that accutually did something other than add more languages to IE.

Any Windows ME buyers should not depend on the underpowered System File Protection. Go out & buy the REAL thing-Adaptec's GoBack!

Another pro IT pal of mine in Atlanta said

" I tried running ME, the longer I ran it, the worse it got "

My thoughts exactly, BUT ,, I think I will try a fresh install on a AMD powered machine just to see if it makes any diff.

I haven't tried WinME... I don't believe I will after reading the above posts.

I use Win98se and I have WinPro (2K) but I would had to have replaced half of my peripherals (scanner, modems, etc.) to use it. I too look forward to an alternative to Windoze. Linux would be interesting. Then I would just need to replace most of my software!

I also hated to waste my $$ but may try again at a later date. I can get into just as much trouble in 98.

Well, it's finally happened.

ME has crashed on me and HARD.

Now , I only get a DOS prompt.
quote->>

Verifying DMI Pool Data .......

C:\>SET windir=C:\WINDOWS
C:\>SET winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
C:\>SET COMSPEC=C\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM
C:\>SET PATH=C WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND; MY PROGRAM
C:\>SET PROMPT=$p$p
ditto temp
ditto classpath canon photod adobec

This version of Windows runs on MS-DOS 8.00.

C:\>_

sInce I have another machine to work on, this isn't terribly important to fix as is.
But, for the sake of trying to learn,, what would I do to get it going from the dos prompt.

I tried reg/restore

Doc, Why did you try ME? After I spoke so highly of you.

I thought ME was supposed to ease people into w2k. W2k has some bugs but it sure is stable.

My experience with WindowsME.

I started with the first Beta release. It was a mess!!
I installed the second Beta release. It was still a mess.
I skipped the first release candidate but installed the second release candidate.
I was charmed....
Now I have the final version and it works stable but slower than 98SE. But that is normal. There are a few extra real-time programs running in the background to keep the PC in shape. The only disappointing from ME is that there are no new useful good features.
It is thrue ME is Slower but I like it.
