I think home edition does support networking function see here. (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/features.asp)

If you are running any firewall software like Zonealarm, make sure that it recognizes your LAN and that the nic card on your XP system is not behind the firewall, this will keep you from receiving a ping on the XP system.

Try going to search and search for a computer...in the blank box put in the IP for the system you are looking for. Hope it helps:cool:

Aaa, This is a good-one. If you can ping between both pc's
example:
pc1(laptop)- ip: 192.168.1.1
pc2(Tower) -ip: 192.168.1.2
ping 192.168.1.1 (from the tower)
ping 192.168.1.2 (from the laptop)
Do you get replys in both directions?
Let assume you do have good pings to and fro each of them.
Do a (Find Computer) on the XP box and input the ip of the tower, this example has 192.168.1.2 or the tower name i.e TOWER.
If this works and you find the tower, then thats all you need.
If I remember the MS way an election has to take place as to who or what machine is the Master Browser on the network, since you dont have a server. The election is won by OS installed. Starting from lowest Win95, Win98, NT or XP in your case. I think it can take upwards of 30mins or more for this election to take place.
One workaround is to add the ip and cpu name to the lmhost file on each machine.
I hope this helps.......Jc
