I have an old 6X CD ROM that is now lying idle. So I thought I will use it to play music . Well, I bought an AT power supply unit and powered it up. THen I connected the output to my stereo amplifier. I 'm able to play any commercial disc purchased from the market but I can't get it to play any recorded CD-R. What could be the reason?

Many older CD-ROM's can't play CD-R's because of the different reflectivity of the disc.

Thanks a lot for the info, so that now I don't have to waste any more time trying to figure out .

If possible, you could try a different brand of CD-R. Different brands behave differently, usually depending on the burner.
