I just finished assembling my new system from scratch.....my first time for this. I turned the porew on for the first boot.....however less than two seconds later it shuts off.....no matter what.....any thoughts? Could this be heat related? Could it be my power supply? I noticed that my power button still stays lit until I turn it off....but the actual sytem does nothing...please help!!

Can you get to bios? Have you tried clearing your cmos? Are you overclocking your processor?

make sure all the cables/wires are nice and snug. pay special attention to the wires leading from your power supply to the mobo. Pay special attention to the wires running from your case to the power switch pins and reset pins. Look at you mobo documentation and be sure you plugged the power button and reset cable wires into the right pins. I've done that a couple of times, its annoying. Especially when you want to crank up your new rig!

Do you get any beeps?

Im pretty sure everything is set up right. I get a beep, the hard drive light lights, the floppy drive light lights, the mobo power light lights, the hard drive light lights.....but it shuts off immediately.....all my power button pins and led pins are correctly connected.....so im lost!

first off, what type of Mobo are you using?... I had a similar problem before. Some mobo's have an LED light set that will show you exacly how far into the boot process your PC has gone into. And if it doesnt we'll see what else can be done about your setup. (list the componets in there as well... ya might have a simple problem of having two chips that just dont want to live together)

Which power switch are you using? If you have a power supply with a big O/I switch on it, turn that switch on and leave it on. Then press the power button on the front of the case and the computer should start up, unless the leads from the front of the case are plugged into "Gadget Row" in the wrong order. I had this problem just this weekend, and correcting the problem on Gadget Row fixed it right up. If the switch on the front of your case does not work, then it's Gadget Row.

Rest assured, nothing is damaged or defective.

Make sure that your CPU fan, or at least any fan with a 3-wire plug, is plugged into the connector marked FAN 1 on the motherboard.

Most modern motherboards have a monitor on this connector that will shut down the system if it does not detect a tach output from the fan, that way, if the fan stops so does the system.

I agree with Kuasimodem, I had the same problem, moved my fan to another connecter, solved it.

Last time I built my computer, it was those tiny jumpers. I remember the first time I built a comptuer I through the jumper away. Took about 30 minutes to find.

Advice: Don't do that:D
