Hello and happy holidays:

My almost 3 year old (or so) P3 800
Dell (blah blah bla) Win98se system is haunted! Icons change on their own, system files update without auto update installed; and Netscape 6.x keeps losing it's settings and I have to reset it almost every time I use the darned thing! None of this is new mind you but the Netscape thing is most annoying! I must admit it's worse since I changed to ATT broadband ( actually @home sucked and att is remarkably fast, I'm quite satisfied). ATT reports it will only work with IE (monopoly? who said monopoly?) any suggestions?
All settings seem to be happy, there are no conflicts reported.

Auto resets have been traced to defective or weak, low power power supplies and flaky ram.

Both can go bad over time.

I agree with the power supply and the ram, but I once had a (common) virus on my Win98SE system which caused the same sympthoms.

Have you tried a virus killer?...

Or move the network card to another slot or get a better one.

It seems like you have a virus on your computer. Try to download a trial version of Norton AntiVirus 2002 or 2001.

Icon changing can also be related to "Max Cached Icons" in the registry. This is a very common problem on Win9x... Try the the method below and see if it helps...

1) Go to run and type: regedit

2) Go To:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
entVersion\Explorer\Max Cached Icons

Change the value for "Max Cached Icons" to 8192

As for the system rebooting on its own, it could be a number of reasons. RAM & Power Supply unit as mentioned above. But it could also be a number of other things. Such as Video card, NIC, etc! I had a bad NIC that caused my Win2k to reboot itself... It could also be Windows itself that's causing this system instability due to corrupted system files or drivers. I would recommend doing a clean reinstall of the operating system and see if the problem persists.

I have Win98SE.. I've just built this 900 mhz Celeron.. and the hibernation settings seem to be setting themselves.. I don't know what's doing it or I'd stop it.. It happens about once a week. I have PC cillian in mine. There are no known viruses.. and the RAM is 512 megs of PC133.. That is brand new..

Any ideas on what's going on with it...?? OR could I use an exorcist?
