I read this off of Tomshardware...
http://www.tomshardware.com/video/00q3/000913/index.html
essentially, it converts the DVD's data to MPEG4, and then it'll fit on a CD-R. Has anyone gotten this to work? I tried it on my copy of American Pie and Blade, and it kept crashing.

Donkey - please let us know how it goes.
Is there any other use for this or do you just give out copies of DVDs on CD-Rs? In other words, is there a "legal" use for this?

After reading the manual for my Pioneer DVD ROM, I found some lines addressing this issue,
quote:
"The writing or copying of commercial DVD video is strickly prohibited by federal and copyright law..."
What Does This Mean?
Of course this means you can't make copies of "The Matrix" (too bad) but you can make copies of your home DVD's, If you have any

Actually having gone back and read toms hardware article again they seem to have started with the DVD files on their hard drive. which they put there using some suitable tool or other. Does anyone know how this canbe done. It seem flask is only crashing each time it has to spin up the DVD in the drive?

DVD's can't even be copied to the harddrive without the special help from scripts like css_descramble.c aka DeCSS. If you want to find it, you can even go to Disney's search engine www.go.com (http://www.go.com) and you will get plenty of links. Too many people have been prosecuted for linking to it directly, so I'm not about to.
After it's ripped then you can convert the MPEG2 into MPEG4 using a proggie like Flaskmpeg.

Seeing as it wasn't working i was sitting there deciding whether or not it was worth my time and effort to try and look for a solution.
I came to the conclusion that i would only be copying DVDs that i own and realised that there was no point in it cos it is just as easy to stick the original in the drive. So i decided not to bother with it and just remove it and forget.
I expect programs like this will have an effect eventually on all normal video compressions but i don't think there is any real point in me doing it appart from, i suppose, the sheer try it and see value which was what i was going for. But even that failed to keep me interested enough to cross first hurdle.
I expect it will have more interest for people who are keen on pirating films for profit etc but not really for me.

Yeah, that's why I was questioning it's use.

Divx's are like the video form of MP3's, and are slowly growing in popularity, even though its like over a half gig on a harddrive for each.
I have read up on Divx encoding, but havent tried it (heck I dont even own a DVD). I was watching a Divx on someone elses computer (Divx's are pretty popular in college), and I can see why people want to do this.
The quality is still superb, which was my first shocker. Also he didnt have a DVD drive. It would allow people without DVD drives to play High quality movies.
Also from readin articles, it seems to be grueling for the CPU, both in encoding them and in playback.
I think this is some awesome new technology, which will never fly for 3 reasons -
1) DVD companies - They will keep it repressed as much as possible to protect thier DVD's
2) Whereas, for a band to support MP3s, only the members of the band have to decide to openly support it, a movie has many more people at play - Actors, directors, stage crew, etc. MP3 exploded when it got open support.
2) The sheer size of the files are huge, despite content, and is unfeasable to download/transfer/store these files especially on dialup, which still hangs on.
I still think MP3's are the reason that harddrive companies started making huge harddrives, and sold a heck of a lot more, lowering prices.
Could this do the same?
Probably not because I dont think it can ever go mainstream.
I hope this technology doesnt go wasted. I would like to see a DVD quality movie released on a CD. That'll rock the industry.

can you convert digital video(is that Mpeg2?) to mpeg 4 so you can save a 2 hr home video to a cd and wath it with divx?

Actually, your conclusion is wrong.
Just so you know, DVD movies are normally in encrypted files split into a volume on the DVD disk. These files are normally 1gig apiece, and usually 5-10 of these. You can, in fact, decrypt these DVD's within a matter of minutes with one simple program. VodDec finds the files on your DVD, makes a decryption key for each file, decryptes the file, then copies the unencrypted file to a directory of choice on your hard drive. Trust me, it works, I have clients who have given me work videos on DVD before. To convert this DVD movie into a Divx movie, just use Flask and follow documentation that you can find easiely at www.google.com (http://www.google.com) .. As far as making an identical copy of a DVD onto another DVD disk, I wouldn't have a clue. But, I know, there is/will be a way in the not-so-distant future.

Another point to look at as far as dvd goes....if you think about how easy it is to dupe a vhs recording..I think that dvd is pretty much being shoved down every ones throats...And Dvd is going mainstream because its harder to b00tleg..I think that dvd is a great medium..but im gonna hold off till I can make my own archives....
