As far as i can recall the virtual memory portion of winXP is virtually similar to pervious versions of the OS, incl. Win98.

Find the performance section of your system, where the swapfile size is defined, and make sure that it hasn't been set to a low value.

You should, in your case let windows handle the swapfile, if you don't feel confident setting a value yourself.

Otherwise, for systems with 128MB or below i suggest a minimum value for swapfile size at 2x system memory, and for systems above 128MB 1.5x times system memory.

Make sure the maximum swapfile size is left at the maximum space available on the drive, as this will allow the swapfile to grow as required. you should never need more space than the minum level though, so the swapfile size will remain constant at that minimum value.

alot of people complain that assigning this much to the swapfile is a waste of space, but seeing as drives are commonly available at 30GB and over these days, theres not much of an argument here.

I've installed XP on other peoples systems who were a bit wary about doing it themselves, but don't have it yet myself, so i don't remember exactly where the swapfile sizes are controlled to, but i suspect it's in the device manger area as per previous MS OS's.

well for you then, 1.5x 196MB = 294MB swapfile.

you can enter this as i've put it above, no need to enter it as an exact value as Windows will round it up to the nearest whole Megabyte automatically.

enter that value in the "Minimum Size" box, and leave the "Maximum Size" box as high as it will go (total amount of free space on the drive containing the swapfile, usually drive C:).
