i just want to know how all you guys on these forums can afford all the athlon xp's and pentium 4's with the latest abit motherboards and having these fabulous video cards. I have a job and all i can afford is a crappy athlon 1ghz with an ecs mb and a hard drive i got 1 year ago! did you guys ceap equipment or something???

I just upgraded to a 700Mhz Duron, and you are saying 1Ghz is crappy? I am just waiting for prices on Athlon XPs to fall, then maybe I'll upgrade.

As for how people "afford" new stuff - either they save money and don't spend on other stuff as much, or they buy on credit!

1Ghz???

I'm lucky that the MB of the high end system in my life can even support that high a chip.

All of the high end computers in my life have been ones that friends have asked me to help them with, not mine.

And i agree that saving up and spending on something important is the way to go. But you gotta eat...

I am also building a comp, but it shouldn't cost more than 3000. I work at Dell though and make 12 dollars an hour and work about 50 hours each week during the summer when i am off school, so I make a lot.

I can't afford any of this stuff, So I steal the food from childrens' mouths to feed my ever increasing and voracious appetite for new goodies !!!
Just kidding folks, I work like everybody else and I wait for the deals. Right now I'm waiting for Santa to help me out with a new monitor and WD40 gb hard drive, 7200rpm, " I promise to be good for the rest of the year Santa !!":D :D

I just built a 1.2Ghz T-Bird back in May. All below for about $1400 from Newegg:

ABit KT7A-RAID
1.2 Ghz T-Bird
CoolerMaster EP5-6I11 (lapped)
256 meg Micron PC133
Enlight full tower case
4 extra fans
Viewsonic GS790 19"
Elsa Gladiac Ultra (GeForce II GTS Ultra)
Sound Blaster Live! Value
3com 10/100 NIC
LinkSys 10/100 hub
3Com 56k PCI (hardware, not Win) modem
3.5" floppy
40gig IBM DeskStar
Creative Labs DVD Drive

And probably some more things I'm forgetting. Since then, I replaced my old Yamaha 8x8x24 with a Plextor 12x10x32a, added another 256 meg Micron PC133, added a Maxtor 40gig and set it up with the IBM as a mirrored RAID array. As it sits right now, it was around $1600. I don't consider that to be too much... :)

It rolls right on with Q2, Q3, UT, HL, HL:OF, TFC, & Max Payne. I'm expecting to try it out on RTCW sometime around or just after Christmas, but I don't expect it to be a dog...

I usually buy the newest cheapest when I upgrade.

How can I afford it ? Well, I don't drink, I don't smoke and I'm single.

I won't upgrade for near a year as all my money is going for the restoration of my baby (car).

Work overtime with decent wages, charge some, and save for about a year.

Don't drink, don't smoke (anymore, of course this never bothered me money wise), don't have a girlfriend, married though.

Some people deal drugs on the side. It allows them to buy all kinds of neat things, like big screen tv'eez, Playstation 2'z and XboX's, Cars, Motorcycles, 50 foot yachts, new sofas for the living area, those cool fridges that make ice all by themselves, and of course all the latest PC equipment.

hope you are 'enlightened'

Dont do anything illegal to for him to give you that cash.

I save my money and don't buy little things here and there. I just spent $250 last night on a motherboard, 1.33ghz athlon processor, heatsink & fan, and a case. I'm stil missing, an optical mouse (I had everything else at home). :D

are you asking if I do anything illegal for the cash? That depends on what state we're in.

That is unfortunate Doomaholic. Some are just privileged to be born into a higher social level. To change your situation I would recommend either to do what ever it takes to aquire the parts you need (low road) or find a carreer that you positively know you will succeed at, be frugal, invest wisely and when you are older perhaps you can give your children what you did not have.

Just bide you time. I just upgraded from a 233Mhz machine that lasted me a number of years. If you shop around and wait for the good deals, you can build very cheaply over a span of time.

Heh! My posts are stuck on 295. What's up moderator?

My new Dell 1.8GHz, 512 RAM, 21 inch monitor cost about half what I paid for my top of the line IBM 200MHz, 32 RAM, 17 inch monitor 5 years ago. They have sure gone down! Think they will go down that much the next five years?

How I afford it? From working for 36 years of my life... doing without some toys that others had, trying to save a buck or two.
Now retired, don't have to do without.

I have a 1GHz PIII, which is my most expensive computer part

My motherboard I got for about $20 off eBay by bidding at the last minute on New Year's Eve!!!
My computer case I pretty much did the same.
I don't have a hard drive yet.

My keyboard is so old, I have it plugged into a PS/2 adapter, because it's the old 5-pin DIN style (about the diameter of a nickel).

And my mouse I got from a Microsoft Live! Event.

I just get my dad to put it on his credit card. Then I take a couple of months to pay him back. It's worked pretty well so far... I only make like $200 CA a month. My latest upgrades have been financed by selling my 'old stuff' (Duron 750) to my friend.

Recordlord

I am a recording engineeer in Music City USA. I was fortunate enough to be blessed with the gift of music. I make way to much money. I am 37 and single with no bills, but I do tide 10% every Sunday and contribute to my community when I see fit. I donate my old computers to schools. Give to others and God will provide. Work hard and most of all work smart. Dont work for someone else, work for yourself. Find something you enjoy doing and you will never have to work another day in your life. I mow lawns to help out a buddy of mine during the summer. Why? I dont charge him for my time. I enjoy the outdoors and hard work, most of all just knowing I am making his life a little bit easier is payment enough. I cannot stress enough the importance of happiness. If you are not happy with your current career path. I would suggest a change is in order. Life is much to short to be stuck in a warehouse/office cubicle for 8 hours a day. These are just my honest opinions yours may differ.

Anywhooo, to answer the question. I work hard and I am able to afford most than others.

I can't believe some of the prices quoted here, they seem very high compared to what I am use to. I rarely buy from the big name shops, in my experience they have a tendency to rip you off.

Actually, my wife isn't that bad, but it's fun to listen to her reasoning. She views a PC like she would a washing machine. You buy one and it last 25 years. Then she got a job where she had a computer on her desk. After a period of time, one day at home, she had to use my system and started complaining about how slow it was. It didn't take long to get the order in.
