It was the oldie 28.8 that he used to have, well yeah, I guess the one he gave you could be classified in the same category also, hehe http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I dunno why he even bother keeps on getting these winmodems in the first place. such a waste of money. Now I can't speak for all, just the ones we've got. Hehe...or maybe its him and his string of lucks eh.

Hey Cody, so what did you do to the one we threw at ya? My bro did get it to work but it took quite a few tries...

My bro had one. Was a real pain in the **** to install. Never worked it speeds, takes intermittent breaks whenever it wants. Last place it ended up was in the dumps.

You get what you pay for I guess.

I no longer waste my time on Winmodems.
Hardware-based modems are the way to go if you don't got the dough for cable, dsl, asl, etc...

Hey Doctj

I buy them all the time. For a cheap modem they are pretty reliable. I have probably installed 40 or 50 of them and can only remember having a problem with one.

I used one myself for a year and a half then I switched to a external 3com. Now I run DSL so a modem is kinda obsolete.

If your system is running well prior to installing it you wont have any problems with it.

I have been using the Supramax for a couple of years now and have no complaints. I had bought the modem when they were $100. I always get atleast a 50.6K connection and stay connected. I also use the voice mail software that came with it to turn my computer into my fax and answering machine. I think that they are a great buy for $17. Dont forget to smell the roses.

It's a standard implementation of the Rockwell HCF chipset.
Get driver 2.1.2.135b for it, and it usually does rather well (45-50k connects).
Newer drivers use far too many CPU cycles to do the same job, and are NOT recommended, unless you have a definite problem with older ones.
Check out my modems page. (http://members.cnx.net/reboot/modems/)

I have used the SupraMax before and it is a good little modem. However, if you are going to run a Winmodem, I would suggest buying one based on the Lucent Chipset. They run a bit better with less cpu overhead than the Rockwell based modems. Nice deal on that modem by the way!

If you're using a powerful cpu say a tbird or duron does it matter if you use a winmodem? Won't the cpu utilisation be relatively insignificant?

CPU utilization will not matter on a fast machine, but sometimes Winmodems do not hold the line as well on older, noiser phone lines which = disconnects and packet loss.
