When mounting the heatsink/fan on a Duron 1GHz processor, how easy is it to crush the core of the CPU? Is it like an eggshell? Is it even MORE fragile than an eggshell?
I want to know before I install my Duron into my new system.
Also, will the 1GHz Duron be able to handle DDR memory? From what I've seen on my travels of the AMD website, it should be able to handle DDR. While on the subject, what does "DDR" mean, anyway? I know it's fast, and I know it's what I want, but how does it work, and why is it called DDR?
If you can help me, please do. I will appreciate it very much.

The core on the Duron is sensitive. Not over sensitive but not under sensitive (That sounds gay i know) Take your time and you'll be alright.
Durons can handle DDR just make sure the mobo has DDR slots not SDR. DDR is for Double Data Rate, meaning in each clock cycle the ram recieves 2 messages from the cpu instead of one on SDR. (I think)
Hope i helped.

All AMDs are more fragile than Intel. But it does not mean that they are like an eggshell. Just be careful, or invite an experienced person.

Just work slowly and take your time. I managed to get mine installed, and I had never done it before. Make sure you keep the heatsink flat on top of the cpu and don't rock in or rest in on a corner on the core when installing it.
I don't know if they are fragile, but mark my words : the heatsink is HARD to secure in its place, you'll feel like it's gonna break the socket, but it won't. :)

While installing my heatsink on my 1.4 T-bird, I slightly scratched the edge of my core (it has a roughly 45 degree edge on it now, a little wider than a needle) and the CPU still runs fine. I almost had a heart attack when I heard it crush, it sounds like sandpaper being rubbed together. I had a small amount of metallic powder left over on the die itself. Like I said, it still runs without a problem, but still be careful when installing. I've seen Athlons that have large chips out of the core on all four sides that still work, so don't be terribly concerned with breaking it. Just don't let the HSF slide sideways while applying it.

Best thing to remember is: Take your Mobo OUT of your CASE when installing the CPU, and you should be able to get it on there without much problems. If you do scrape/crush it a little bit, it will still work.
My 1 ghz Duron has PC2100 DDR right now.

dam i just unstalled my 1gig spitfire duron 2 days ago .....my heart was beatin but it was nothing just dont be stupid make sure to line it up with the socket and the core nice and lightly
then clamp the mofo in (thats the hard part cause for me i only had a butterknife(no flat screwdriver around.only star)but if its lined up perfctly you can apply pressure to it safely
