my dad is having trouble with the isp he uses cutting him off. I need to know of a simple program that will simulate internet activity so that his ISP doesn't cut him off..
suggestions?
thanks

Sometimes, depending on the ISP, you can just configure your mail program (Outlook or whatever) to check for new mail every 10 minutes, and that will be enough. Sometimes not.

There is also programs like this: Stay Connected! (http://www.bestzips.com/products/sc/main.html)

Thing is, an ISP usually won't disconnect you unless you've been idle for 15 or more minutes. If he's getting disconnected while surfing the net, then he's got some other connection problems.

it's not a connection problem, it's just a hassle to reconnect... everything is behaving as expected...
I'll look into that program and see if that'll do it for him.

If there's more than 1 local access #, try using another.

When has this started? I also started getting problems within the past week or so. My ISP doesn't know of any problem on their end; I've got 4 computers using 3 different brands of modems - they're all having trouble. And I have 4 access numbers to choose from. They all give me the same problems now - not connecting at all, slow connection speeds, or more frequent disconnects.

Sounds like a noisy telephone line. Are you able to run a direct line to your box outside your house. If you can do that and the problem still persists then its likely the phone companies lines. Which you may be screwed then. Unless you subscribe to some kind of hi speed connection or dedicated data line then the phone company is usually of little help. They only guarantee good quality voice transmissions which I assume you have. Good Luck!

there is no problem at all here with any of the equiptment.. as i said before, everything is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. I just want to avoid being disconnected if I'm idle for more than 15 mins.

Skill, not to be a smart-a**, but from an ISP's view, and even from us internet users, people logged on w/no activity (no modem activity) are usually jamming up the internet needlessly. I can see why ISP's do this -- traffic is bad already, & only going to get worse -- much worse. Getting disconnected while transferring data is another, completely legit complaint. Most web pages that are loaded can be read from the Internet history when offline. JMHO.

as in a previous suggestion..when I had used a modem I would set my mail program to check my mail every 3 minutes and there was times it would stay connected for 2-3 days that way untill I disconnected myself..I got my moneys worth from the ISP's
