Uh, did I miss a new trend in mobile computing? I always thought the concept was less power, less weight. I must have missed something...
One of the things Intel has going for it is that its processors don't make a lot of heat. In fact, Intel has been toting this fact quite a lot, (I assume) in response to AMD.
So this move seems weird to me. Perhaps the amount extra heat is being exaggerated.

look at it this way
amd runs hotter than intel, but has better throughput and less ghz.
intel runs higher ghz but less throughput @ a cooler temp.
the old intel mobiles ran less power and heat than the copmetition.
increase the speed, increase the heat, but it will only be as hot as an amd is now. the battle will rage forever...

This doesn't suprise me-AMD had major problems with thier current line of mobile CPUs, relating mostly to heat and energy consumption.
Intel's chips do run somewhat cooler, and use less power, but it was inevetable that they would evenyually hit the same walls that AMD found a while back.
I am writing this post on an HP Pavillion laptop with an AMD 1GHz chip-the **** thing is burning my legs, and you'd swear it was a high-power server, for all the uptime this thing gets on batteries. But it's dead fast.
It is clear that both companies are tunning into similiar problems with their mobile CPUs. I would keep my eye open for some new radical technologies-mostly geared toward low-energy PC's-to come sometime in the near future.
If they can't come up with some lower-power chips soon, we may see the speed of notebooks hit a pretty hard wall.:D
