Today I was installing Age of Empires 2 on a HP 800 computer. At about 50%, I hear a big pop sound. I open the the cd-rom and I see my cd shattered in about 50 pieces. Go figure!!!! It was also smoking a bit. How is this possible? It also looks as if a piece broke off the cd-rom.

I have a co-worker with an HP 800 and the exact thing happened to her. After her cd shattered she proceeded to turn the computer sideways and beat on it until all the pieces came out. Ten she got this pretty blue screen and called me. Now her hard drive was bad her her system would not reboot (from the beating). She sent it back to HP and it took 6 weeks to get it back.
Good Luck! I would follow up at least weekly.

I am surprised no one else has commented on this. I would like to see if anyone else have had similiar problems.

I just got an IBM Aptiva AMD 450 system by "inheritance". The CD ROM in this thing seemed to be very hot, when I leave a CD in it, the CD would get to abot 150* F. I put the system in a bibgger case and added a couple fans. Now the CD's don't cook like they did. I think your problem with those HP's may be overheating.
