Ok at the moment i can only get a 33600 connection but I'm moving to Perth(big city)
next year an i'm chasing something a little faster.

So whats available and what works best?

I've heard of a USB modem out and a Satalite dish in.Twin 55600 or living next door to your ISP and running an ethernet cable over the fence.

Is their anything else out their?Anything over 5-6kb sec is fine but i want to drop the ping times right through the floor without spending heaps.(under 1000 and less than 100 a month)

Not sure of availability or pricing in your area, but look into ADSL. They are fairly cheap and usually pull 40-60k downstream, and 16-48k upstream, depending on the modem you buy. Check at your local phone company.

ADSL modems aren't like standard modems. Closer to Cable Modems. It uses existing copper cable to transmit high speed data. The phone co. installs a splitter on your phone line, and a NIC in your comp. Then you just plug the ADSL modem into the NIC and the split phone line into the modem.

I'd suggest trying to get either a 256k or 384k modem. My 128k just isn't fast enough on uploads.

xDSL requires a special type of modem and will not work with your garden variety analog PC modem. Check out your local ISPs and ask them about DSL. They will know what you are talking about and what hardware will be needed. Often, you can get the modem free as a promo, or rent it instead of buying outright.

The other option, if you have cable, is to call your cable company. Ask them about internet service in your area.

Personally, I'd stay away from dish based internet. The costs are too high, you won't drop your ping a great deal( high speed, but hut high latency) and there are no standards yet at all. You are also still stuck with the modem and tying up a phone line. DSL uses the phone line, but you can make and recieve phone calls at the same time.

Cable is good http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I'm hoping it doesn't catch on in my area so that I can hog all the bandwidth to myself http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif 150K/sec downloads are nothing to sneeze at when you're used to 4 k/sec DLs. Even if it drops to 50K/sec, I'll still be content. In my area it's only costing me $3 more a month than a phone line and regular ISP. Cable is good.

Your options are (in no particular order):

-ADSL: 256Kbps-1.5Mbps, uses existing copper wiring, requires special modem obtained from provider.

-Satellite: about 400kbps (so they claim), downstream only, requires regular modem for upstream and to send data requests, expensive for heavy surfers.

-ISDN: 64kbps to 128kbps, requires ISDN digital line service, special modem.

-Cable Modems: Typically 512Kbps to 5Mbps, upstream and downstream, requires special modem from cable co. and NIC card, uses coax cable line.

-Terrestrial microwave: Usually provided via a broadcast antenna on a radio tower and an antenna mounted on your house, 10Mbps+, requires special modem and a NIC, spotty availability, usually requires line of sight view to transmission tower, downstream only. See http://www.wantweb.net for an example.

My choice would be ADSL if it's available in your area. Check with your local phone company (US West, Southwestern Bell, etc.). Or, 2nd choice, a cable modem.
