Thanks, MCalmon:rolleyes: vibe666 12-12-2001, 02:37 PM that would depend very much on what you want to do with it. Example: I also have a 40GB HD. I dual boot win98se and XP Pro. (all partition sizes are approx.) My first partition is 3GB with win98se on it (FAT32) Second partition is 10GB with XP Pro on it (NTFS) Third Partition is 26.5GB which has all my backup data on it. Drive images of a fresh install of 98 & XP (2.5gb), downloads. Software, MP3 & Movies (20gb). i plan on getting a second HD of 40GB+ (maybe upto 80) to put my archived data on (where speed isn't as important), which i will put in an old P233 I have got lying around and just keep for backup etc. connected to my ADSL router to make myself a little network. like i said, depends on your planned usage. and with Partition magic if you don't like it that way change it and then go out for a drink or watch a movie and it'll be done when you come back. Kurylo 12-12-2001, 07:06 PM I have 40GB IBM 7200. My partitions: C: (FAT32) = 4GB for system (WinXP) and all installed applications; D: (FAT32) = 4GB for my documents, pictures, programs, etc; E: (FAT32) = 32GB for videos, music, games, VCD's, large programs installations (WinXP, Office, Stylus etc). And I'm glad to have such suitable (for me) partitions. Jimstep 12-12-2001, 09:18 PM I use one partition. I've ended up running out of space on the partition Windows is run from due to Microsoft allowing third party software to load programs into system folders. If you want to dual boot, use another hard drive. They are not that expensive. mcalmon 12-12-2001, 11:26 PM Thanks all for answers, I read about create a partition only for the swapfile. Another question is about install the apps in other drive than C: if I connect a second slave my drive letters change creating a new problem. How can I boot and my slave partition go to last drive and not to D: Thanks again, MCalmon vibe666 12-12-2001, 11:52 PM if you go into control panel, system, hardware/device manager you can then click on your drives. HD, CD or whatever and and assign a particular drive letter to each drive. works different in WinXP though. too late (3:45am) for me to be bothered looking now. maybe someone else can tell you (and me) to save me spending time trying to figure it out for myself.:D Psycho Logical 12-13-2001, 03:43 AM Order in Which MS-DOS and Windows Assign Drive Letters http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q51978 How to Prevent Drive Letters from Changing After You Add a Hard Disk or a CD-ROM http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q282530 A separate partition for the swapfile on the same physical drive as Windows will slow down your system. The only way you gain anything by having a separate swapfile is if: • it's on a separate physical hard drive, and • that hard drive is on a different controller channel If you use a utility lke Norton SpeedDisk, you can gain a little by having it relocate the swapfile to the outermost (fastest) tracks of that drive, but it still ends up being in the same partition. UWConvoy 12-13-2001, 08:15 AM Does anyone know how to do that in XP? I'm getting a new HD soon to add to my current system, and I also would like to keep most of the drive letters the same.
