Just a question about Norton Ghost.
I was wondering if i ghost an image of my C: and its ghost size is around 1 GB and i wish to transfer this data size onto 2 CD-Rs, but i have to split them first.
How do i do it, so that i don't have to rejoin them and Norton Ghost will just ask me to insert CD2 after CD1?
Thanks in advance for advice given.

Ghost 2001 gives you the option of spanning the image to several CDs.
Both Nero and Easy CD has options to backup your HD to several CDs. I would look into that option its less complicated than ghosting then burning.

That would be less complicated, but from what I hear a Ghost of your hard drive is usally smaller (sometimes a LOT smaller) than the actual size of the used space on that hard drive.
Just a thought

Thanks guys, but i still can find the way of splitting the image into two parts.
Can someone show me the way to do it step by step, or is there a website showing the steps?
Thanks

This works...
On the ghost boot disk, edit the Autoexec.bat file.
On the line that reads Ghostpe.exe you need to add two switches.
The first is "SPLIT=XXX" where the XXX=the size of the pieces.
The second is not required, but it makes things easier, and that is "AUTO". It automatically names the segments.
The line should read
GHOSTPE.EXE /SPLIT=XXX /AUTO
Remember to put the segment size you want in place of "XXX"!
I have experienced trouble burning direct to CD-R's, so I have partitioned my drive to image from C:\ to D:\. I then boot into Windows and use my burner software to copy the image segments onto CD's.

Thanks for your help, but on my Ghost boot disk there is no Autoexec.bat file.
I am using the Norton Ghost 2002 and these are the files on the boot disk.

I have never used the split command switch, I just tell Ghost to copy a drive to an image, then select my CDRW drive and it splits the image into the correct size to fit on each CD along with compressing the image to about 60% of the original size to save space.
You do not need a step by step instruction. Just follow the prompts in Ghost.

Check your file viewing options.
On an Explorer window click VIEW, click FOLDER OPTIONS.
Next click the VIEW tab and make sure SHOW ALL FILES is checked.
I believe that you should see the autoexec file anyway though, and if it's not there, I don't understand how the mouse loads and Ghost starts!
You can go to the Symantec website and find the details as to just what Ghost can do, and how.

Hi,
You should try file split pro http://www.ppprogs.demon.co.uk/
It works fine for me!

You might want to try the Drive Image software also. I forget who makes it, but they also make Partition Magic. I have used both Notron Ghost and Drive Image, and I prefer the Drive Image software since it seems to compress the image better/smaller. In addition, since I use Windows 2000, my drives are all NTFS. And, I like to store my backup images into another harddrive. Well, Norton Ghost 2001 (not sure about 2002 version) has an issue with writting to a ntfs drive. while using Norton, I have to keep my backup drive in fat32. The drive image software does not have this issue, which is the second reason I prefer it.
Good luck....
btw...I have always heard that using Nero, or some other backup solutions (like the ones in Windows) will not give you a complete restore of your harddrive. And only a true image of your drive will do the trick.

When you select your CD-RW drive, do you mean you when you are asked to store the image, than you select the CD-RW drive?
As far as I know, none of the imaging programs, creates and writes the files directly to a CD. First, you create the files saved on a hard drive. Then, you burn that file to CD!

FROM :
How to save an image file directly to a CDR/RW disc
Situation:
You want to know how to save an image file directly to a CDR/RW disc instead of saving it elsewhere and then copying it to the CDR/RW disc.
Solution:
To save an image file directly to a CDR/RW disc, run Ghost.exe or Ghostpe.exe as usual and choose the CDR/RW drive as the destination drive.
NOTE: This feature is not available in previous Ghost versions.
Here are some hints for successfully saving an image file to the CDR/RW drive:
Before beginning, check the Ghost compatibility list to determine whether Ghost supports your CD-R or CD-RW drive. See the document Ghost compatibility with CD-R and CD-RW drives.
Start the computer with a floppy disk that has the Ghost files but not the CDR/RW driver files. If you do include the CDR/RW driver files on the floppy disk, do not load them into memory. That is, do not load them from the startup files Config.sys and Autoexec.bat.
Start the computer with a floppy disk that includes only the DOS system files and Ghost files. Do not load drivers for peripheral devices such as scanners, printers, and so on. See the documents How to create a DOS system disk for Ghost and Which boot disks to use when writing to CDR/RW drives.
If you want to make the CDR/RW disc bootable, create a CD-ROM Boot Disk in Ghost Boot Wizard. This disk should have the appropriate CDR/RW driver files for the computer. Have the disk available to insert when prompted.
Do not use a spanning switch on the Ghost command-line. Ghost will automatically span CDR/RW discs if necessary.
Most SCSI devices require an ASPI driver that is specific to that device or brand of device. If using a SCSI CDR/RW device, check the CDR/RW drive's documentation and make sure that the file Config.sys loads the driver from the floppy disk. For more information on accessing SCSI CDR/RW devices, see the document How to determine whether Ghost can access the CDR/RW drive.
Use these steps to save the image file:
1. Start the computer with a bootable floppy disk that has the Ghost files on it. Do not use the CD-ROM Boot Disk that you created in Ghost Boot Wizard. If you have Symantec Ghost 7.0 or Norton Ghost 2002, use the "Boot Disk with CD-R / RW, LPT and USB support" that you created in Ghost Boot Wizard.
2. Run Ghost.exe or Ghostpe.exe. Choose the CDR/RW drive as the destination drive.
3. If you answer "Yes" to the question of whether to make the CDR/RW disc bootable, Ghost will prompt you for the location of the DOS CDR/RW drivers. Insert the CD-ROM Boot Disk that you created in Ghost Boot Wizard when prompted. Ghost will copy the drivers from the floppy disk and save them on the CDR/RW disc.
