Hello,
You know i don't usually use this board, but it's a great resource, thank you. Here's my problem, I have an older system (Cel 266 maybe? with only 64mb of ram) and it's SLOW! I"ll get some more ram soon, but i find that i have more than 10 programs running, or at least when i hit control+alt+del, there are usually more than 10 on, and i have to shut down some of them to speed up the computer, and from what i can tell, none of them (other than explorer) effect the operation???? SO how can i stop these from opening automatically upon start up? Thank again, Matt.

The first thing is to remove any progs you don't want to load out of the Startup Folder in your Programs menu. Right click on the offenders and select delete.
If that doesn't satisfy, proceed below.....
Try running the little util that M$ bundled with Win98SE: msconfig.
Go to Start \ Run then type msconfig.
Click the startup tab, and de-select non-critical stuff (the same progs that you were killing before via CtrlAltDel.) leave the scan registry thingo (can't remember it's name; I'm @ work on a 95 box...). Leave one copy of the Power profile thing.
Then reboot, and see how you go.

As fish_fingers has already told you.
Remove unwanted entries from the Startup in the Start Bar.
Run msconfig and uncheck any unwanted programs from loading in the Startup Tab.
Keep scanregw, SysTray, and anyother program you want to run on startup. If you have DSL or cable modem, you'd want your software firewall to run on startup.

I've found that there is a set of programs (last copy is shareware) called Optix, which allows you to change a lot of settings in windows. part of the program allows you to add, delete, or edit programs that come up when booting into windows. last time i checked, i believe it was available from Cnet with a 15 day availability (when i downloaded it, it appeared to be 15 times that you opened it, counting once per day)
