Hi.
Yesterday I installed a second CD-ROm drive - it is an older version runs at 6X speed only. The make is Wearnes - neverheard the name before ? Neither did I , got it for free anyways:) . Well I put it on the secondary IDE. did not connect any jumpers for master or slave. When I powered up, neither the bios nor the Win95 explorer show the drive in the listing. Mobo is ASUS CUV4X , PIII/733 MHz, 128Mb, 13GB. Would the master slave jumper be causing the problem?

The jumper may be the cause of the missing drive.

Set them to master on the secondary IDE and see if it works. It it is still missing, then I would bet that you got a free paperweight for your desk (or a paperweight for the bottom of the trash can).

Well Sterling,
I'll install the jumpers and see. It should work, because in my older PC it was connected as primary slave and it worked without the jumper. Otherwise I can always use it as an audio CD player but I'll need to spend some money on the power supply. By the way , it does not identify CD-R discs, so you are right, it might finally be worthy of acting as a paperweight.:)

Thanks for the reply.

Sterling,
I think I really need some help here :( . I now bought a new Samsung 52X CD Rom Drive and connected it in the secondary IDE, but the even the bios does not show me that it is present, let alone Win95 ! I tried by putting the jumper in all three positions, Master, Slave and Cable Select, still it does not appear in the device listings. My primary IDE has a TEAC CD writer, which is working alright. THe mother board I am using is an ASUS CUV4X ,PIII 733 MHz with 128MB RAM. Please, can I get some help here ? In the bios setup, I have enabled both PCI IDE channels- primary and secondary.

First...is the new cd rom on ide 2 getting power(does tray open and close...does led light up) Second ...is the ide cable pluged in correctly and firmly. Third is the new cdrom on the second ide by itself...set to master if it is. Check bios/standard cmos setup....set secondary ide master/slave to auto (if cdrom is on secondary) and mode to auto
post back results
hope this helps

try it and see

Hi GunHo and Bairdy,
I did all that. The drive is by itself on the secondary IDE, so I connected it as master. And in the BIOS I enabled both the IDE channels, set the secondary IDE Master and Slave to Auto. But to no avail. The drive is powering up and operating, I can play audio CD's and listen through the headphones. So that confirms the drive is woking. But BIOS and OS (Win 95) won't show it up.Totally at a loss here. Anyone else using this motherboard -ASUS CUV4X ? And I will check that cable thing today. That seems to be the last option. I have posted a query to the ASUS tech. support guys but no reply yet.

I've had some of the wierdest things happen trying to use win95 and a system with both a burner and a cdrom drive - are you trying to burn on the fly, or just want to use both drives while you're running games, programs? It's always a safe bet to copy cds to the HD first, then burn from the image, but it sounds like you may not have the room.

You probably have already tried this, but try to run the HD and the cdrom as the primary master and slave, with the burner on the secondary IDE, or assorted combinations with the jumpers set right.

And if you're using auto detect you might want to set the bios to detect each drive, then audjust and save the settings once you've looked at how the bios recognizes the drives that are cabled together - sometimes the auto detect won't give you all the correct settings you need and if they're different it can cause problems.

And last but not least, go to w98 - that's what I did with an old system with the same problem, it would see some drives but not others - go figure. I'm sure you can find the upgrade or buy it real cheap.

.... by the way, that old system and cdrom might have accepted cable select, or some old mobos even accept a cdrom where the bios shows it as "not installed" but w98 did.

Well rmanet,
I have decided to change my OS to Win98. But first I'll backup all my important data with the CD burner, then install the new OS. Then let me see what happens. Thanks for staying with me guys.
