okay. that does it. I've been annoyed by my last popup window.
I am now officially on a crusade.

Anyone else here - show of hands - who hates this: trying to open a few browser windows in a row, typing in the first address, tabbing over to the second typing it in, looking upto realize that you only got as far as "www." before the popup ad stopped you in your tracks, then repeating the same scenario in the third window, and every single window you ever open.

So let's see - how many of you raised your hands.... 1...2....3...4...... 158 ...... 994,888,377..... okay, all of you. Good. We're all on the same page. So what to do? Turn off Java? Hmmm... no. that will work, but many of these sites all but require that you use it. So what possibe solution can there be to this plague of the internet known as the popup window???

<light bulb.illuminate=1>

hmm... let's see... the (near) beauty of Java/html/ and other languages supported by the internet is that they are languages that are compiled at runtime. Which means that the language must be supported by the host machine ... i.e. - your computer. So how about this - remove that stupid f#*@ing line of code from the supported language. Precisely what this would entail i don't know.. haven't really researched it. But I'd be willing to bet my bottom dollar someone here does. (note: that's only the bottom dollar, not any of the dollars above or around it.) In fact, it's possible that this type of fix already exists. If so, could you please send it on my way? I'm not interested in half a$$ed fixes like adrage. all that seemed to do was poll the system to see if a program opened a popup and then closed it within a user defineable amount of time. That's useless to me.

So anyone out there got some words of wisdom, words of support for this crusade, or words of anger for those who annoy the world with popup windows?

OPERA 6.0 already is there. It allows popups to be:

accpted or
refused or
opened in background

unfortunatley, refusing pop-ups, locks me out of a few sites. I suppose we could disasse...er "look" at Opera's code and see how they do it.

There is a simple fix if you're using Mozilla (which I doubt), but other than that you're going to need to search for third party solutions. You also have to remember that those pop-up ads use the same JavaScript that many legitimate sites do (window.open('parameters')). If you disable this functionality, you'd be out of luck for a lot of web sites.

You could just run Pop-Up Stopper from www.panicware.com. It works fine for me. I got absolutely fed up with d*mn windows popping up all over the place when I was trying to get things done. I've noticed lately though that some sights seem to have figured out a way to get around Pop-Up Stopper.

Try Pop-Up Killer from www.popup-killer.com it has a large database of recognised popups with a facility to upload your own list (which can be compiled by simply adding any popup which appears with a simple double-click). Must admit that every time I've tried to upload my list it has failed, but that doesn't affect the program's performance and you can still maintain your own list.

Analog X's POW! is excellent. It's light, and very easy to use.

Another vote for popup stopper. Best I've seen. :)
