Well I am about to go get a new Hard Drive and would like opinions on what the best HD would be to get.

I am set on getting the Fujitsu 10.2gb UDMA Drive, any thoughts on that?

You're going to get alot of different opinions on that. This brand is bad according to one person. But a another person says they don't have any problems. So what I'm saying is go with what you think is the best for what you want to spend. You didn't give many details on what the situation is with your computer, but it seems that the IBM drives are slightly better than most of the rest as far as speed, access, and seek times. Off hand I can't remember which one it is.

Good luck!

I'm running a

Abit bx6-2.0
Celeron 300A
128mb pc100
4.3udma fujitsu

I need the 10.2 for storage, the 4.3 is too small for me. I will use the 4.3 for my system "WIN95b" and the 10.2 for games and programs.

Size doesn't matter much, but speed does! Get a 7200 rpm drive if you can swing it, youll be much better off regardless as to UDMA33/66.

Stay away from Maxtor if you plan to overclock.

If you can live with 8.4GB instead of 10.1 the Maxtor 4320 and Quantum CR drives are quite fast and really cheap at the moment. Last time I looked you could get the Maxtor for $104

And the Quantum for $111

Right now I have a Fujitsu that had bad sectors out of the box. In fact, I have to send it back. Whatever you buy, make sure to keep the receipts and send the warranty. I guess people get lucky with certain hard drives.

I have just put a quantum fireball ka plus 13.6 7,200 8ns and its great. It's udma 66 which my bx6 rev 2 doesnt fully support but its still great.

Bad: Samsung hard drives suck! I thought they were great, quiet, fast, and cheap when they were new - but before long 2 of 4 Samsung drives began to degrade in performance - one has devoloped 4 bad clusters, and both are very tempramental, refusing to run on 100mhz bus (33.3mhz). these things barely run - forget overclocking.

Good: Seagate and Maxtor drives have been very reliable for me. However BBA is right, Maxtor do not like out of spec bus speeds, but you can still overclock if your multiplier is not locked, as in the case of the K6-2/3 series.

When buying a HD, I would consider 2 things:
- speed (in terms of rpm)
- buffer size

I would consider 2 makes: WD and IBM (I must admit that IBM are better)
==> 2Mb cache and 7200 rpm, both UDMA 66

If money is not "important", why not consider SCSI U2 (with adaptec controller) ?

At the end of the day, it is YOUR choice.

Well guys thanks for the input, I bought the Fujitsu 10.8 drive and for the price and warranty I think I made the right choice.

Thanks to all.
