I have PIII 850 Mz system using VC820 MB, 128 MB RDRAM. I have two HD and one DVD ROM installed on the system. This m/c has Win 98SE installed. Till some time back my DVD ROM was working fine. Suddenly it started creating problem. When-ever I used to insert any Cd/DVD int the system, my system will freeze or Blue screen of death with appear with one VXD error. I tried changing many configiration.
1. Both HD on First IDE channel and DVD Drive on secondary IDE.
2. Master Hd and DVD ROM drive on Primary IDE channel.

My system recognizes the DVD Drive installed in case 2 but not in case 1.

I also tried installing another DVD drive thinking that Drive may have gone bad, but second new one is also giving the same blue screen of death.

What could be the problem? How to solve this.

My DVD Drive is Pioneer Model DVD-114 (10x).

Thanks
:confused:

Maybe your power supply or ram is not up to the task anymore I'd think about a hardware problem and start swapping parts.

But my external CD_RW works fine. I checked up the Pioneer DVD manual it said to include following in the config.sys file.
DEVICE=c:\ATAPI_??.SYS D:/n
LASTDRIVE=Z

Where n is 0,1 for Primary/slave on Primary IDE and 2,3 for Primary/Slace for secondary IDE. My DVD ROM drive gets recognized by MB when it is installed on Primary IDE but it gives blue screen of death in case I insert any Cd in it. DVD ROM drive fails to be recognized on the secondary IDE.

I checked up that my secondary IDE is working fine as when I connect my 2nd HDD on the secondary IDE, it works fine ..

Its behavior is strange to me.

Any suggestions?
:rolleyes:

if the DMA function is on it might cause problems, make sure it's off. Another thing, i had a huge blue screen problem couple of months ago aswell, with the famous name VXD in it. Try installing your VXD drivers. It worked for me.

Those drivers where on my mobo cd, perhaps try looking on there?

If you can't find them there try search the net for you're vxd drivers, whatever that might be :)

I tried this DVD ROM drive on other system. It worked. Looks like there is a problem with secondary IDE controller on the Motherboard. My Intel VC820 MB had 3 years warrenty. Does Warrenty covers these MB Problems with replacements etc.
