I have this type of dvd-rom player and i can not use it to play dvd's because i get a warning that says i need to install a decoder. I saw this message posted before with some more questions for the person that posted it to answer and there was no more information about it. How do i know if i have a decoder. DVD player (win me) starts up but then the warning comes up. What do i need to do or buy to make it work.

A decoder comes in 2 types. A hardware decoder card or a soft decoder, which is a software decoder.

The decoder is used to allow the viewing (decode) of a DVD on a computer. The player is just that, a player so you can watch the DVD.

Your DVD drive should have come with a cd that has the necessary drivers and programs needed to view a DVD. PowerDVD is a good software decoder and player.
