I am working on a machine that has AOL. The problem is that you can surf everything within AOL's domain just fine (including Email) but when you try to surf the net (www.whatever.com) it comes up with page not found. I remembered seeing this problem about two years ago and called AOL and they had me change something in the network confiuration in control panel. I cant remember what I did though. When I call them today they just act stupid and blame it on IE 5.0 and Microsoft. I re-installed AOL, IE 5.5, and Windows 98 and nothing worked. I yanked out the network stuff too. Anyone have any suggestions I would apprecialte it.

This is a customers machine. They want it fixed without losing any data (aka formatting).

The few times I've gotten that a reboot fixed it. On one occasion it took 2 reboots.

have you told the machine to automatically get the connection information in 'tools > internet options > connections > Lan settings > Automatically Detect Settings' ? see if that helps

Assuming this installation of AOL worked sometime in the past, try deleting the AOL adapter, then rebooting. It will rebuild.

Start>Programs>AmericaOnline>SystemInfo> Utilities Tab ---choose >Uninstall AOL Adapter. Reboot.

The problem is with AOL's browser...the
stupid "tech" guys at AOL just don't want to
admit it... anyways, uninstall---then reinstall AOL...after that, DONT USE AOL'S BROWSER, use INTERNET EXPLORER instead for
surfing the net... this should solve your
problem....

Nothing has worked. Proxy was not checked but I did check it for the heck of it and still not make a difference. Internet Explorer wont work either. I have removed all network adapters and reinstalled. I have removed aol and Internet Explorer (including deleting the folders) and reinstalled. I have re-installed windows.

This did previously work. He has so much stuff on there that formatting is not a viable option. But I am leaning more towards that.

Have you tried running IE by clicking on the IE Icon in your system tray? Also, you may want to check the security level in your AOL browser, try setting it to medium or low. If you can't get the browser going, download a copy of Netscape, this will keep you from having to re-format your drive for a while.
