A Dumb Question

This Maybe A Dumb Ouestion but i need to know what exactly RAID is i have onboard RAID and would like to use it. Iam not entirly lame I know that to use it I need 2 hard drives (or am i lame) i have 1 maxtor 10gig 7200rpm. Do i need 2 of these or can i mix and match. thanks for any response please let me know if iam confused or if i am on the right track or if you think iam stupid or anything thanks in advance.
