I have a Gigabyte GA-6BXC motherboard and am sortly going to install a faster P3 processor. Do you just pull these processor out a bit like a PCI slot or do they have any retaining clips like memory chips do.

On the processor hold thing there are is a little slide or clip thing...one on each side. Just side them up or snap them and carefully wiggle out the processor. It's not that hard once you look at it you'll see what I am talking about.

Good luck!!

How did the PIII upgrade go? Was your PIII the 100Mhz part or the 133Mhz ?
What is the Rev. level of your GA-6XBC 1.7, 1.9, 2.0 or 2.0A?

I have a Rev.1.7 board, and I believe that may not be upgradeable to Slot 1 ( or Slot 1 adapted ) Celerons or PIIIs above 500Mhz. However, next to SW2 on the Rev1.7 board are instructions for setting the System Bus speed to 5 different values. This is consistent with Celeron & PIII operation so I have some hope.

They have clippy things on each side like memory chips and are easily removed. They're the push in kind (I think...) Just push inwards and pull and out comes the processor.

The upgrade went well I just pulled of the old processor and inserted the new 800Mhz. It's a 100Mhz fsb processor. My motherboard is Rev 2.0 according to my manual.
I could'nt find any clips to slide back, it was a bit hard to remove and as being running now about 3 weeks without problems so I'm assuming everythings ok. :)

Glad to hear of your success.

I recently used some benchmarking software to help "balance" the components in my machines. I'll pass this along in case this is news.
One source is Dacris Benchmarks (5day trial) www.dacris.com
I bought 256Meg PC133 for my GA-6BXC ( works fine at 100Mhz; it was on sale for same price as 64Meg of PC100 ! ) and Dacris confirmed a transfer rate of 260Mbyte/sec consistent with that part running at 100Mhz.
Dacris helped me confirm that when I installed the PC133 memory into a PCchips 598LMR (all in 1) board rated for 100Mhz system-bus, the memory speed dropped down to 70Mbyte/sec. This was consistent with some flames against this board that PCchips only supported 66Mhz bus even though the product documentation said 66/100.
Dacris also noted that my original AGP card was too slow for the machine.

Installing Sandra http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/sandra provided an abundance of data (quite frankly very little useful to me) about the chips, boards and software and revealed that my card was running AGP 1x and the board will support ACP 2x. Sandra also revealed other trivia such as the CL2 / CL3 memory type of installed SDRAM ( another thread revealed that you need to look at the DIMM card to find this out ).

Both Sandra and Dacris have built in baselines to give comparisons of your configuration to other processor board baselines, but this is far from an exact science.

Now that you have an PIII-800 you may want to assure that the video card is not a bottle neck.

But my guess is that the limiting factor for the 6BXC will be the IDE interface which maxes at UDMA mode 2 = 33Mhz, which means that ATA66 drives operate (transfer data on the system bus) at 33Mhz and ATA100 drives operate at 33Mhz.

So....low diskI/O applications ( video, games ) would be nicely affected by an upgrade to an 800Mhz CPU, but high diskI/O ( starting Windows XP ) may not get much of a boost....
I may stick with my Win98SE for a while.

Hi Wonweber
Thanks for the info the memory speed drop from 260Mb to 70Mb seems a big drop.
I download the software you stated and find out more about my system. I'm running XP and to tell the truth I don't notice much difference from running my old 450Mz processor. Defragging my drive and using a full virus scan seems to work a little faster.
Thanks DTech
