it just keeps starting over and "checking drive for errors". It gets to about 10% defragging, then restarts...all night long. I've shut down all background and anti-virus jobs. Nothing is running but defrag. What is going on?
It was running fine until this week. I usually defrag once or twice a week.

Hi.
Here are several thing you should check.
1.If using Windows ME you should disable the system recovery option. It backs-up windows files while you work, and therefore, is always writing to the disk.
2.If your anti virus is McAfee's then you really have to make sure it is disabled, not simply turned off. To accomplish this go to Control Panel and there should be a McAfee's VShild Logo somewhere. Double click on it, and uncheck 'Load at StartUp'. Reboot.
3.Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and end any all programms except for Explorer and SysTray.
Finally, how much memory do you have?
Have you 'tweaked' windows cache?

Have you tried running Defrag from SafeMode?
I would also run Scandisk first then run Defrag.

I did tweak my virtual to 800mg min/max, though I don't know why it would go bonkers now. I'm running Win98 and tied in a LAN, but when I run it I disassociate the LAN, in otherwords, I don't sign on the the LAN. I haven't tried running it in safe mode, but that's a good idea. Thanks.
Also, make sure you are not using a Screensaver and that all of your Power Management options are disabled as well. I tried running Defrag in Safe Mode and the darn SS and PM settings were still hanging it up.
