I'm building my first AMD system Wednesday, and I'm concerned about the RAM. On Pricewatch, I see "AMD approved," "Won't work on AMD platforms," and other things that only confuse the matter worse. Is there some special type of RAM that works with the DDR system? Or will any SDRAM do? Thanks.

I've used two kinds of generic pc100 and two of pc133 with no problems.

Don't know about whether generic ram will work or not. But accubyte will try selling you a stick for $140. They say that you have to use a major brand. So they told me when I was ordering a cpu through them.
Didn't buy it though. In either since of the word.

Ummm... i dont think there are AMD-RAM and nonAMD-RAM but if you do have the extra cash, go for branded ram. They usually last longer, well here in asia anyways!

There is no such thing as AMD-approved RAM, exactly.
There is, however, a type of RAM called VC-RAM or Virtual Channel RAM. This is a high-end DIMM that's shown to give a small 4-5% increase over standard SDRAM DIMMs.
Also, you cannot put DDR RAM in an existing SDRAM chipset or vice-versa. If your motherboard uses SDRAM (which all current shipping motherboards do) you'll need SDRAM. I recommend buying branded RAM--Micron, Crucial, and Infineon all make an excellent product.

Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to know!
