Hi,

I just bought a computer that was built by this guy. I am trying to connect to the internet but after the connection is made the computer freezes and then display the error message "Internal Stack Overflow" change Config.sys and restart. There was no Stacks value in Config.sys so I added the line, but when I boot it tells me that the line I added was incorrect and I receive the same problem. Can you help. I have a PCtel HSP56 Micromodem, and I am running Win 98. Can you offer any solutions. Thank you in advance.

"Internal Stack Overflow" means there is not enough space in memory either set aside or available to handle the calls being made to the system hardware. Check the port and IRQ settings of your modem in Device Manager. Make sure that there are no COM2/COM4 or COM1/COM3 conflicts and that no devices are sharing IRQs. You'll need to disable or remove conflicting devices. Check it while in Safe Mode, you may find duplicates and hardware that should'nt be there. Let us know what you find or have questions.

Many of the PC Tel chipset modems on the market are JUNK !!! Been there and done that many times. Consider a Lucent.

Just increase stacks.
In win.ini (edit with notepad) look for the [386enh] section, and put this line in:
MinSPs=8
Save it, restart and see if that helps.
If not, change the 8 to 12 and try again.
Keep going up in increments of 4 until it works.
If you get to 32 and it's still not working, bring it back down to 8 and buy a new modem.
