In my pc pentium mmx 166 mhz, i have 32 mb edo ram installed, but earlier system was reading 24 mr edo ram. today I have removed all 4 edo ram (each of 8mb) and reinstalled in the bank
thereafter system reads 32 mb. But the indicator lid (green lamp) always ligten up and stop booting.

I am getting following error messge.

Checking Memory 32..ok
himem testing....
Himmem system detect unreliable memory at address
01000006. XMS drriver not installed
Press any key to proceed

Then gets another error

Himem.sys not found
please ensure that file is in your windows directory

I have tried lot of times removingand installed the memory but not solved.

Please help how can I start the computer.

Himem.sys is already there in the Win directory.
I am using windown 98 second edition.

sounds like you've got corrupted files, try reinstalling windows you can do this without reformating to save all of your programs and documents... but you may have to do a clean install if that doesn't work...

Memory problems, you got computer problems. For the sake of the time saved while on your computer (loading time, boot time etc.) upgrade while the parts are so cheap. You could build a computer 5X the speed of that one for less that $300. Bust the piggy bank open, you won't regret it.

Sounds like you could also have some bad memory...try booting with not all the memory installed and see if you get anywhere.

My experience with that error was bad RAM, but I do agree , time to upgrade, for what you might spend on edo ram for that computer , youd be part way to a better one.

it was bad memory problem. I tried a lot by copying files etc
and after I have formated my hard disk and reinstalled windows98. Even thereafter I am getting the same error i.e.
himem.sys found unreliable xms memory at address 10000006
etc.

Then I have removed all the four pcs. of edo ram (each 8mb)
and booted without ram. it was beeping only. then inserted 1st one nothing happen and then inserted 2nd one alongwith 1st
Suddenly computer started booting properly.

I have removed remaining 2 pcs. I think one of it was damaged.

Any way I thank all of your for giving valued advices.

Thank

Im not completely sure about your setup, but I believe those sticks have to be installed in pairs, otherwise "BEEP,BEEP".
