I have been having a similar problem...
Win98_SE on PIII 450 Via Chipset with 128Mb RAM and a Seagate 8.9Gb IDE HDD.
1. Got a virus - VBS
2. Downloaded McAfee VirusShield...
3. Installed it and ran a disk scan.
4. Machine halted half way though scan. Dead as a whatever
5. Reboot.
6. Got Error messgae: Error initializing device IOS: Reboot blah blah
7. Did that
8. partial boot to safe mode then hung
9. Reboot
10 ABSOLUTELY would not boot to anything except DOS
11. Looked on Internet
12. Found ref to LDE HDD and small disks etc etc an AMD chipset.
13. Luckily had recent data backup
14. Decided must be a hooked boot sector from Virus.
15. FDISK and format and re-install
16. Same problem
17. Low Level disk format - fdisk, reinstall, same problem
18. Decided must be old bios - upgraded bios - same problem.
19. Can boot other machine from disk mentioned above no problem
Some ideas please. I am now confounded. I believe it is the board but what are the chance of it happening so convieniently? System has been running beautifully (as well as one can expect from Win98 anyway.) no new hardware
no bios changes
have pulled all chips, cards etc for through dust remove and checking. all look fine.
have seen suggestions re underclocking etc etc.
Need some advice, assistance, solutions!
thanks
