HI,

I have an older set of software called Alldata. It is automotive repair books on cd. I use to have what they called a "key" that plugged into the LPT port on the computer, then you could plug your printer into the back of the key. It looked like a simple adaptor with no fancy gizmos. Some how the software looks for the key to run, and I believe this stuff was created in the late 80's so it can't be to technical. The best I can figure is the "KEY" jumpered one or more terminals for the software to look for, and since the printer is hooked up to the back of the key it must not be the pins that would interfear with the printer. If anyone could give me some insite into what this "KEY" could be doing, and how I might jump the terminals if thats the case. Thanks:

I used to use these with my accounts software. The more common name is Software 'Dongles'. I'm afraid that there designed to stop software piracy and were intentionally difficult to build your own DIY unit. There may be more than a couple of pins shorted out inside the key. There could also be a little chip enbedded in the dongle that the software makes a call to on boot-up.

Each software manufacturer probably had his own design, so you could be in for a long search.

We do NOT allow discussion about hacks/cracks/bypassing keys.

You are out of luck. Buy new software or contact the manufacturer.
