Hi Rob,
I just bought a Quantum Fireball 15GB, 7200 RPM HDD. I have to say, that although I have a T-Bird and A7V, that hard drive seems to make a difference. I don't know what the monetary conversion factor is, but you can pick it up here for about $115.
In general, I would stay away from Maxtor or Western Digital since I have had problems with both.
Hope you find what you are looking for.

I second the Quantum Fireball recommendation. But be sure to get the 7200 rpm because the 4400 rpm is a dog.

One more thing,
(covering up a double post here)
I've had good reliability from Maxtor drives, however, I find them somewhat slow and very intolerant of overclocking the FSB.

Hey Rob....if money is a factor, you can't go wrong with the Quantum drives. Been running them for years without trouble. Cmonster is right though....get a 7200rpm if you can....the difference is very noticeable. If you can afford it, the IBM is your best bet though. I just bought a 30gb 75GXP a couple of weeks ago for only slightly more than what a comparable Quantum cost around here, and I'm very impressed. Extremely quiet and fast drive. I've been burned too many times in the past using Maxtor drives and found them to be very noisy, although in all honesty I can't speak for their new generation of drives...they seem very popular.

Bit of a difference in prices, why do we pay so much for the stuff? You can buy the same kit in the US for the same $'s that we pay in £'s. Thats often a difference of over 50%.
Anyway, enough grumbling, I have just got a Seagate Barracuda 30.6 and am very happy with it. Spent all day putting Windows 98, ME and 2000 on it. Not one problem and noticably quicker than the last one, an IBM which claimed to be 7200 but I don't think it was.
PS. I only paid approx £110.00, email me and I'll let you know where I got it.
I'm still running my Maxtor 5400. I have a WD 7200/66 that's just over a year old going back RMA. Hope the replacement works right.
I'd happily trade for a Maxtor!
I've only overclocked briefly, mainly due to my older agp video card.
I've consistently heard good things about IBM drives.

IBM, 7200rpm
I've bought several HD's this year.
2ea. IBM 20.5gb ata 100 @5400rpm, good reliable fast drive, runs cool.
1ea. Maxtor 13.5gb ata/66 @7200rpm , a bit noisy , fast, runs fairly coo.
1ea. Maxtor 27.2gb@ 7200 ditto to above
1ea. Quantum 15gb ata/66 @7200rpm, fast BUT MAN, this sucker sounds like a F-16 on shut down and start up.
You can cook eggs on it too.
A cooling fan is a MUST for a Quantum 7200.
IBM 15gb ata/100 @ 7200 the Good one, gmpx something 75. Looks real pretty sitting its box. If it is any better that the 5400 versions, I'll be smiling http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif , which btw , I'm sure it is.
BTW, the IBM series 75 drives will withstand over 50g's while running and 350-400 g's while off-line !!!! How bout dem apples ??
IBM is supposed to have increased the data density to allow faster access time, they claim a 20% increase over the "industry" average.
hmmm, I wonder if they averaged the Quantum Bigfoot into that equation.
A slow boat to China can retrieve data faster than the Quantum 4400 drives http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Don't get me wrong, my IBM did me proud for a long while (18 months anyway!).
I just noticed a big increase in speed and and installing all my apps seemed to go quicker on the Seagate.
RobUK: To answer your other question in Apps and OS. I used Partition magic to get my 3 OS onto the HDD. Mind you all 3 are Windows variants. Having used it though, I don't think you will have any problem mixing OS's.
Hi,
Go for IBM, they are the best.
