CD-rom problem: If I have interface cable hooked up, computer will not boot-up. As soon as you remove cable, booting begins. Once computer is up, plug cable in computer freezes. Also have not had any sound coming from speakers since this has happened.

I got tired of this problem and bought me a new computer and gave old one to my kids. But would like to correct this problem for them. Please help!!! Do I need a new interface cable? If so, where can I purchase one?

Thanks!

You can pick up an ide cable at any major PC outlet. The symptom could be caused by many things. One of them being a bad or loose cable . The others to consider are:
Audio cable, audio cable in the wrong pinout, irq conflict, power supply or cable, or the drive is bad. I would experiment with the cables first , if you did'nt do anything prior to the trouble to cause an irq conflict then I'd buy another drive, you could get a DVD drive for about 40 bucks online if the system can handle it, and I'm sure the kids would love that:)

Have decided to experiment on the 2 old units I have and try to get 1 working.

Thanks for your help. I have found much info @ sysopt this is a great place to find answers!

Can you put the CD-Rom drive on the same IDE cable as the hard drive...in master/slave configuration? Could be a bad IDE port on the mobo...doesn't happen often, but anything is possible.

Good Luck!!

Are you absolutely sure you've got your jumpers set correctly? That could cause your computer to maybe not boot at all if there is a conflict...although usually what happens is the device just doesn't work (and the computer still boots...) but how much is the computer booting? Will it post the amount of ram and the processor speed? Will it just hang halfway through startup?

It sounds like the reason the computer freezes when you plug the cable in (after the computer is already on) is because it doesn't like having things plugged into it once it's started...but I'm not positive about if this is true of IDE devices.
I know this is true if you unplug large fans once the computer is on hehe.

Thanks for the replys. I will check it out again this weekend. Before I turn the computer on, all cables plugged in, and then turn computer on it seems that it does nothing at all. Until I pull the Interface cable, then it will boot up.

I'll let ya know what happens after i work on it this weekend.
