I have a Sony CD Extreme burner. I have tried burning some songs that I've downloaded from napster and Morpheus and I press burn. It says initializing and it then begins... Sometimes a blue screen comes up and makes me restart my computer... other times the computer just freezes. But the most annoying thing is when it actually finishes... it sorta skips. It plays the song..but it skips one or two seconds. It does it like 25 times throughout the whole song. One time I tried to burn a cd and it burned fine. Its just the songs that I've downloaded that has trouble. Can someone help me? Ive closed everything in the tray and even press ctrl alt del and closed most of the things... Can someone tell me how to work this thing. I have sony cd-r and rw so it should work becuase the burner is sony. Please someone help me.

Try running scandisk then defrag before you burn. You may have to run scandisk a couple of times to be sure that you have no errors on the hard drive.
I also say defrag, because MP3s are the most fragmented file you can have on a hard drive. I know this from experience. I have 3Gigs of MP3s that when I defrag it takes about an hour just to defrag the partition that the MP3s are in.

How fast are you burning? Maybe try slowing it down.

Another thing you can try is to first convert your MP3s to waves before burning them. I find I make fewer coasters since following this pratice.

If you're getting blue screens, your problem may be hardware related. How many devices are on your IDE channels? Is the burner on a channel by itself? In most cases, if you've got only one harddrive, the burner will run just fine as the slave on your primary channel. Multiple drives can get tricky (runnin' 4 harddrives and 1 burner myself). Any device conflicts? Have you tried DMA? Are any resource hogs running in the background? If you've got the ram and cpu for it, you should not be getting any coasters with an AV & Firewall or other progs running in the background. Are you using the burning software that came with your drive? I'd recommend using Easy CD Creator. I also agree with muchmark...try converting your tracks to wav files first. Some software that does it for you works like ****.

The blue screens havent come up anymore but the problem of skiping seconds is still happening. I am using the program that came with the burner to create cds... I am going to download the Easy CD Creator program and see if that works. If not I try the wave format. Ive also closed all the programs my tray and everything in ctrl alt del screen except explorer. I have a Dell Dimension 8100 series so Im sure its not anything to do with speed or anything with the computer. The cd rom has a attachment in the middle of the belt and I attached that to the burner. Im not too familiar with slave and master or how to set it up, but the man that instructed me to do this told me it should be fine. I really want to make cds and I thought it wouldnt be this hard... I tried scandisk and defreagmenting and it really didn't help. Is there anything else I might be able to try?

I finally got it to work. I downloaded a program different than the one that came with it and it works perfect!

Thank you all so much for your help. Especially cerberus6 who told me another program could make it work.

Thank you all again. :)

Oh, and welcome to Sysopt.
