I'll check back later tomorrow, and if somebody hasn't filled you in by then, I'll give it a shot. There is a pile of stuff you will need to learn the how-toos about if you have never built one before. There are a lot of very good and tallented computer builders here, so getting what you need won't be a problem. The problem will be, everybody has their own tricks and shortcuts...so, when 10 or 12 different people tell you how to do something, you may wind up more confused than you are now..

Its late, and I'm hitting the sack..

Catch some ZZZZZZZZZZZ's Bovan got ya covered ;)

Try How to guide (http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/index.htm) or here (http://www.buildpc.net/) or even right here (http://www.buildyourowncomputer.net/learntobuild.html)
Now if you read all that you should be an expert builder :D

Ahhhh, great sites cyclone2. I have bookmarked them myself. Thanks for those.

Ok sknyer, here is what we need to do to get a starting place. Its always best for the person that needs help doing something to ask specific questions. For any of us to try and tell you how to build a computer from scratch, and attempt to cover all of the bases would be a rather lengthy and envolved writing project, with possibly much of it already known by you.

Lets do this little by little, so that we don't get our wires crossed someplace in the middle. Go look over the sites that cyclone2 posted. See what you can get from that. Make some notes for the parts you don't understand or can't quite get a handle on right now. Don't try to understand all of the terms and part names right now...that will come. Just make a note about such that you don't know what it is or means.

A few things you will need to make a choice on is:

How much money will you want to spend.
Do you want an Athlon system or Intel.
Will you want to get some of the best (higher priced) boards or a good medium priced system.
Will you want a gaming computer or just a good family machine for surfing the internet.
What do you have on hand now...a monitor?..a case.. anything to start with?

Putting a computer together is not hard, learning the basics first is a good idea. Here is what you will need to build one. From here, we will talk about how to assemble them.

A case. Comes in a desktop, mini or mid tower or a full tower. A full tower is used by most builders because of room to work, add extra stuff..and more air room to help keep the insides cooler. Be sure the case has a fan intake and exaust built into the case. The case may not come with fans included, but the case should have a place to mount them.

The computer will need a good power supply. Todays minumum is 300 watts...the more the better. Most cases come with a power supply, just be sure it has at least a 300 watt supply.

A motherboard. Many times, this is a personal choice by the guys that have built a few and already have had good (or bad) results for others. A lot here depends on what you will want to use the computer for.

A cpu (centralized processing unit) the chip that does the processing. This is where you need to make a decision between Intel or AMD. The motherboards do not support both...one or the other. Most builders use AMD because they are about half price of an Intel equalivent. For the cpu, you will need a heatsink (and a fan for that heatsink). If you buy a retail cpu, they come with a heatsink/fan. Most people buy an OEM cpu and buy a heatsink of their choice

RAM...there is several different types of RAM. Depending on your choice of motherboard, will narrow down the ram you will need. 128 mb (megabytes) is the bare minumum today, and 256 or 512 mb is about the going amount for most folks.

You will want a floppy drive (not used much anymore, but I still want at least one in my machine.) a CD Rom drive (maybe a CD RW (burner) drive later. At least one hard drive, probably around 30 to 60 gb (gigabyte). A zip drive maybe...lots of folks don't use zip drives anymore, and use a CD RW burner...I still like to have both. Depending on the type of computer you will want when finished (gaming or general use) you may need a good video and sound card. Some motherboards come with sound and video onboard. You will need a modem to access the internet, unless you will be going with RoadRunner cable connect...they usually supply a modem with the installation.

An OS (Operating System) Windows 95/98/98SE/ME/2000 or maybe the newest XP. You will want some other applications, games maybe, othersoftware to do things with..this can come later as you decide what you want in the end, and are getting familiar with the terms.

Ok, this is enough for right now...go read, and come back, find this thread (don't start a new one) and start asking questions about the terms and parts you haven't quite got a handle on yet...don't ask a page full of questions in one post. Limit the questions to about 2 per post. This will help you understand better the several different responses you may get from different members here.
