I just got a new CDRW drive today. I already had a cd drive installed as the primary slave. I set the the jumper on the back of the new drive to the same and hooked it up. I started the computer and it didn't detect my hard drive or cdrw drive. I thought that I may have pulled the ide cable off of the motherboard so I checked it and one end was pulled up a little. I made sure that all of the cables were connected and tight and tried again. This time I got the same thing. I unplugged the ide cable from the back of the cdrw drive and started it. This time it detected the hard drive and started up. I used another known working ide cable and hooked it up to the secondary ide slot. I set the jumper on the drive to master and slave and neither one worked. when my computer starts it goes through a list of drives. It starts with primary master which is my hardrive it pulles it up and listes the model number. then it goes quickly through the slave and says none. Then when it gets to secondary master it pauses for a long time and then finally says none. it does that when I have the cdrw set as secondary master. It does the long pause when it gets to any ide slot where i have the cdrw drive installed. with my other cd drive I can get tray to open up at any point after I turn on the computer. The tray on the CDRW will not open at all. The light does come on when it is turned on. I think it is a bad drive and I will have to return it for a new one. I just wanted to get some feedback from more experienced users before I got tried to exchange it. If you have any other ideas I can try pleas let me know!
