I have windows 98 on C drive and want to install windows 2000 on the same partition system commander 2000 says it is possible. This is suppose to be the easiest way and uses the least amount of hard drive space.

So I'm suppose to boot to windows 98 and then begin installing windows 2000 but I'm a little worried about losing windows 98 if I don't install it right so if anybody has already done this or knows how to do it let me know ??????

please do as you feel. but, I would never install them both on the same partition. and I don't think 2000 will go for it. I know you can install as many 2k's as you like as long as they are on seperate partitions ect.

I have been dual booting as long as I can remember. to always have a backup o/s to fix the other one with. I have even had 95/98se/ntws/2k all on the same system before. and what are you going to do if one system goes down. and it is shareing files with the other one. than both are going down. to me this is the whole reason for a dual boot to always have a gateway to the system ect.

and if you are worried about the drive space. and you are that low. or don't have enought memory. I wouldn't even consider 2k. I have 256 k mem and 2k loves it all.

I have been using SC2000 for a while and its the easiest thing I've used. Like Gene C I have been able to put W4WG, 2 98SE's, ME, NT4 & 3 diff versions of Linux on 2 drives. I dont necessarily use them all ok I was interested in checking out SC just for the sake of it. I have always just let SC do its thing and it tends to put OS's in their own partitions & hide all from each other. It isnt really what you need I realise because they all take up quite a bit of room. The pdf manual does say it can share partitions but because I had the xtra space on my drives I feel better knowing I will only lose 1 OS if something goes wrong. If you are going to give it a go just do it thru the SC setup so it knows what is going on.

After reading more about it I decided to put w2k on it's own partition to avoid any problems. I took C and cut in half and the new partition became F.

This is my new setup:
C windows 98
D apps
E all media
F windows 2000

Since sns is the only person I've met so far who is using sys comm 2000, I was wondering why it takes so long to simply resize a partition. I decided to resize C and it took 3 hours! C drive was 6 gigs and I cut it in half because I have about 2 gigs of stuff on it with all my new apps on D.

So now 98 and 2000 get 3 gigs each, this is my first dual boot situation so I hope I set it up right.

When it comes to resizing partitions I use Partition Magic - I cant believe how fast it formats, resizes or moves.
When I put NT4 on my PC I already had a few OS's installed on both drives and SC decided it had to move my 'C' partition to place some NT files at the start of my drive - my main windows where SC is installed. I remember that took an hr or so but then again it is moving itself & windows etc at the same time. Like I said I tend to use PM to partition unless SC insists. Not a bad program for 3 MB, I've raved about it before, some people are obviously clued up about multi booting etc but I'm taking the easiest path on this one.
If you decide to format the partition with win & SC on it for a clean up, you just format, install win then SC and it finds all the OS's again (you do have to go into the setup to change the names for your own liking though).
