Recently, a source I have (you know who you are) told me that it is better to run your computer 24 hrs a day shutting down occaisionally than it is to boot up and shut down every day. I have a Pentium MMX 166. What do you guys think I should do? Is it bad to do it? Is there anything wrong with doing it? Is it good to do it? Let me know.

all of mine run 24/7 cracking rc5 and have for over a year with shutdowns for hardware additions or upgrades and the thunderboomers we have here in Florida but otherwise...you will find people that have a say both ways so...crack rc5 and you will have a reason to run 24/7/365...

I leave mine running 24/7. I too am cracking RC5 on all of them. They run at full load 24/7 and have been doing that for about 6 months now. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif I had a pentium 100@133mhz running 24/7 for 4 months(also cracking RC5). http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Same here...5 networked with a cable modem 24/7 bustin RC5! Two have been shutdown once each after a software upgrade, that's it! Thunderstorms, don't even worry about them! Have UPS and voltage conditions, and arrestors on all lines! NOTE: If you're running win9x, you'll need RAMBOOST or MEMFREE or you're box will get sluggish after a while!
I have a P166MMX and have had it running non stop for the last 3 months. No problems. Plus I can also schedule tasks to run over night while it's not in use.
I do notice that it get sluggish aftera while though, do the programs that randy48 mentioned fix this? Where can I get them?

After careful review, my power bill is only about $3.00 more a month the keep the PC on 24/7, plus I never have to wait for windows 98 to boot up! I do reset the PC on a regular basis though. It's odd though, when I go on vacation I turn it off. When I return and turn it on, my video card fan makes strange noises for a few min. then stops. I guess the bearings get stiff once they cool down.

Forgive me if I sound ignorant, but what is cracking rc5? I try no to leave my pc on too much because it is in a small room, and this thing is a friggin heater. Gets about 80 degrees or more in here if i leave it on for more than a day.

24/7/365 and cracking Team SysOpt - RC5! (http://sysopt.earthweb.com/rc5team.html)
Same as codybear, off and/or reboot only when installing hard/soft, maintenance, or troubleshooting. Otherwise, they're always on crackin'.
Solidous, visit my above link, the Distributed Computing forum and hit Codybear's link for other info re RC5.

For win9X, I would never dream of not booting at least a few times a week, often if you're using the box, your gonna boot more than that.
NT4 is a little more stable, but wacky stuff happens after about a week of working and the reboot will generally clear that up. I don't like to reboot as the SMS virus loads upon net login. I have seen servers run for over a year on a MS OS.
If I was doing RC-5, Linux!
I think the stability of the box is determined by its purpose. A dev box running the latest development environments and legacy systems support would be lucky to get through the week without a boot. Nothing worse than to be writing code that appears to not work, but reboot solves problem, yet it occurs more than I wish...

qball's right - I do need to reboot WhyME - I mean WinME every couple of days, to keep the resources up for cracking - even if I haven't 'used' it! Otherwise, the keyrate starts degrading. But otherwise, it's always on.

The original shutdown issue (IMO) was brought up primarily due to stress to the motherboard during heat/cooling cycles.
This caused in some early units to have open circuits(cracks in printed boards or solder joints)
This caused cycling between complete and incomplete circuits in random patterns, so troubleshooting was a nightmare.
Technology has improved on circuit board soldering where this issue is resolved.
The claim of excess wear on drives and other circuits during start-up has not been totally proven or disproved.
One proven fact is rotational forces on the HD.
This causes it to try to do like a gyroscope.
This continually cycles forces around on the bearings, minor though it may be, it is a heat inducing and wear factor.
Power consumption is another issue entirely.
Everyone can afford to pay for the small amount of power that these machines use, but can the environment.
At 96watts for the monitor and 360watts for the Pewter multiplied times all 2.7 billion(?) computers,
With all the uproar concerning power plant emissions, how much CO2 and TRI's (toxic release inventory) are introduced into the environment?
Lets not forget the global warming that is created also.
The toys we use, like computers, need fuel, limit the time on line to when you need it.
We need to conserve any place we can.

Yes Mem Free works, go here and d/l the trial version: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10102-100-2833594.html?tag=st.dl.10001_103_1.lst.td_2833594
It does a decent job although the purchased version has more options, try out for your self!
And here for Ram Boost: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10102-100-1400043.html?tag=st.dl.10001_103_1.lst.td_1400043
