GA-71EX4 mobo with Duron 850,256 pc133 ram,creative mx200 agp,network card,modem & cd drive.OS = Win98.
Will not boot - no POST, only low rapid clicking noise. All devices powering up OK.
Win98 put in Suspend mode - would not revive so power switched on & off several times until Win98 closed normally. Next boot only clicking noise and occassional flash of keybrd lights.
Have tried obvious-removing cards, detaching drives, and CMOS clear down - no use. Vid card OK. Monitor OK. Not yet checked CPU or memory.
Can anyone help?

The hard drive may be shot. Have you tried booting with a new (or different) drive?

Yes I have tried that, and I have checked the HD on another PC - its OK.
It just keeps on clicking.

Have you tried tracing where the clicking noise was coming from?

What makes you think your wife fried your mobo? Did she add or remove any other hardware inside your computer? Did she spill anything on it?
This could have happened to anyone.

Make sure nothing is grounding out. Any bare wires exposed? Powersupply good? Checked the hs/fan? A wire could be laying on a cooling fan, even the hs/fan. This would cause a clicking sound. Also, if its the hs/fan, when the cpu gets warm enough the computer won't boot.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D OMG!! best one yet!!

It may be the power supply. Surge to the psu during an off-on deal could have fried the electronics in the psu. If available, try another one.

Clicking appears to be coming from rear ports area.

Will try another PSU.

All fans seem fine.

Its going to be a busy night, what with shopping for a new wife etc!:p

Have tried another PSU - still no POST or BEEPs.

Have eliminated clicking noise - I removed all components and peripherals then replaced just CPU, memory, video card, and keyboard. Clicking noise gone, but still no output to monitor.

Problem must lie with mobo, CPU, or memory.

Will check each over weekend.

if you can scan the HD for virii....
then if it comes up then clear the CMOS.

then if that doesnt work unplug and reseat all ram vid cards and cpus in the computer.
REPLACE WITH CARE make sure to put them in the right way.
