Are there any pluses to NOT enabling SMART within a HD that has this capability (is read/write speed increased)?? Is it really needed for home/casual use?

Anyone's 2 cents is appreciated...

SMART is always enabled in the drive. Question is just, does the BIOS read the SMART status _once_, during POST, or does it not? There is no performance difference at runtime, you'll just get an early warning when the drive is beginning to develop internal weaknesses.

Sometimes by the time it tells you it could be too late anyway, figure if you don't have mission critical files then you may not need it maybe say in a couple of years when it get older you could enable it see what it reports.
