my boss came to me complaining that surfing the web at home was slow. Turns out he has a p75 with a 28.8Kb modem. so no surprise!
he want to get better connection but doesn't want to upgrade his pc so i just suggested getting a 56.6 modem. he has now left it to me to find him one. I excpect i'll have to fit it and so forth as well. So need a suggestion of a good modem, not too expensive and definitely not win modem as resorces are scarce enough.
cheers
Rod
Check out 3com/US Robotics - never had a spot of bother with them myself.

Except that 3com/USR no longer make modems.
Go for the Diamond Supra Express External serial (not USB).
Check out the posts at www.56k.com (http://www.56k.com) and you'll find out why.
So US Robotics no longer make modems? What is this then? http://www.usr.com/products/home/p-home-menu.asp

You might be lucky to get a 33k to work with the old P75. Check his OS,also. Win 95 doesn`t recognize 56ks and I think the early 95 only sees up 28.8.Most 56ks need atleast a 133mhz or better to work.

PJR, they still have modems for sale, but are not manufacturing any more.
gjwilson. Both modems mentioned are external hard modems and will run on an XT even.
It's not the speed of the modem that makes a diff, it's whether it's a hard modem, or a PCI winmodem.
Who told you that Win95 doesn't recognize 56k's? Who told you that the "early 95" only sees up to 28.8?
You'd better check your sources before you go spouting this kind of false information on any BBS's. Go read a few of the FAQ's at www.56k.com (http://www.56k.com)

I highly recommend the CREATIVE Modem Blaster External. These can be purchased for $69 retail and provide easy setup and excelent connection speed.
Three other things that might affect overall internet performance in this case are the older, slower system (as you pointed out), phone line capability, and ISP.

Ouch!
Comtech is on the money though. Just get a good old fashion hard modem. Even if it is a US Robotics.

jman01pa...sorry if I sounded bitter. comtech`s presentation leaves a lot to be desired. I`ve done as the pro`s suggested in the past and was unable to get a perfectly functional hard modem to be recognized. My OS was the first full version of 95, hence "the early version" in layman`s terms. It could not find the modem so I tried a manual selection which also showed nothing above a 28.8.I guess in my stupidity I gave up and went a different direction. I apologize for any mis-information.

Comtech...sorry to step on your toes....no false info here.. it comes from experience trying to upgrade old pc`s for friends. I`ll be sure to keep my info to myself next time and refer all questions to you , master.
