Hello,

I just arbitrarily decided to write my impression of WinME to maybe help others who are thinking of getting it.

This was just my first impression, Ihave only used the OS for a couple of days, so keep that in mind.

I am helping my friend build a new compuer, and being the newest OS out, he got WinME.

It wasn't too great when I first loaded it up. All of my computers run 98SE and I didn't have any problems at all with any of their installations. WinME, however, gave me one error that although recovered perfectly, still puts it behind 98SE.

Things I didn't like off the bat were numerous. First of all, you cannot disable the "view as web page" mode. I don't like this mode very much because it just takes up screen space and doesn't help at all. It also slows things down. (not much on a 900, but it still does) Also, shutdown/boot times did not seem to improve by any noticeable margin. In fact, it seemed to maybe be slower than my 700 (whih I keep as clean as possible) with 98SE. And this was a fresh install on a 900!

There were a few things that I liked, however. The numerous nice backgrounds included wth ME were nice, but would need conversion to *.bmp's to be really good. Come to think of it, that is all I really liked about it.

I get the impression that WinME would be better suited for the non-computer literate user. It hides the "nitty grity" stuff so it would be easier to navigate if you didn't really know your way aound a PC. Win98SE, however, seems like the better choice for real users. DOS Mode, and more customizability and a little extra speed make it more powerful, but more confusing for the inexperienced user.

Again, this is just my $0.02.

Hi I'm still checking ME out but I like most aspects but I've just lost my search files function, anyway you can turn off web view (I hate it) when in explorer go to:
TOOLS - FOLDER OPTIONS - VIEW - WINDOWS CLASSIC.
