I just assembled a new system,1ghz athlon tb,ecs k7vza,1gig ram,32meg mx400. I use it for gaming. The built in sound works ok, but a friend gave me a diamond mx300 sound card with no drivers. Is it worth me installing the mx300, or should I stick with the built in sound?

While o/b AC'97 sound "does it's work" most of the time, you might try configuring the MX300 card you got. In their time they were compared to SB Live! series, but suffered from bad support, moreover - Diamond quit soundcard business, so you won't get any new drivers.
Still, Win98 and MX300 goes together quite well, W2K/XP will sometimes be a problem.
MX300 homepage (http://www.diamondmm.com/default.asp?menu=support&submenu=Legacy_Audio&product=Monster_Sound_MX300).

My MX 300 is WAY Better than my onboard sound in my Gigabyte board :D
For the latest reference drivers you can go here (http://www.vortexofsound.com/) and use Aureal 2 drivers, Win 98 is great but they say A3d does'nt work in 2k but still sounds great to me
