When ever I run Photoshop 5.5 it comes up with a message that it is out of RAM, when I still have plenty of RAM and swap page left! What is going on?

Are you running a static swap size or letting windows handle the size? If static it would sound like you need to increase the size. Photoshop 5.5 is a VERY memory intensive program. I have 256 megs of ram on my system that I have photoshop on and I constantly hit the swap file when running/starting photoshop.

Yep, Photoshop is a very memory intensive program. I Have 768MB RAM and 1GB Page File and it just eats up my memory and runs the page file o most cases.

You might want to go into preference and change the Memory & Image Cache to a higher setting from the default 50%. I have mine set to 80%.

If You have a scanner of some sort, test the function of it after You have changed the memorysettings as NDC says, 'cause PS sometimes refuses to use scanning devices if the memory usage is over 50%. (Based to manuals). Very strange, because my scanner works just fine with PS 5.5 set to 80%, 192 Mb of memory and a Primax 4800 flatbed Scanner.

Get Ram Booster and let it run in the sys tray. It runs PS5.5 a little slower but won't get out of memory lock ups.
