I'm am kind of new to computers so take it easy on me. My problem is I was tring to install a new rewritible cdrom replacing my old Sony. That came with my Dell XPS700r with a new high speed TDK 241040 and I replaced it by putting the little jumper pin on the same place as the Sony was, but it did not like the setting and have had problems with it not working? The manual says to put the pin on the master setting and any other Cd drive on the slave spot. This to did not work for me either. I also have up graded to XP so I have software problem's also but am getting that figured out. However what is the right way to set up new drive? Do you go by the new drive's manual or set it up like the one that came with the computer? Please help me I am stumped and could use some assistance in this matter.
Thanks for any Help _WildBill65

OK first thing we need to do is to check and make sure that you CD Drives are on the secondary IDE channel on the mainboard..then set your writer as master and the CDrom as slave on that channel then you need to make sure that the IDE channels are set to AUTO in the Bios...and see if the bios can see the drives..because if it doesn't then windows will not see them...let me know what you come up with...ZAN....

Thanks for the reply, Zantark7 I am a complete rookie when it comes to computers. Both cd drives are on the secondary IDE channels on the motherboard and in the the bios it is set on auto one of the cd drive is a DVD and in the bios that one is the master. The Sony rw is the slave. I have gone back to the origional set up because of the problems with the TDK
Thanks again _WIldBill65
