Is there a way of locking the desktop icons so that the screen does not change whenever I defrag my disks. I have removed the autoarrange checkmark.

There are a couple of programs that work quite well. The first is INVISIBLE PRO from http://www.mindbeat.com/ . Its a shareware that works quite well. It does a lot of things, like make the text below your incons "invisible". Actually, it colors the text to the background! But the program costs $10!

I use a freeware/shareware called ACTIVICONS. It's available from their web site at: http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_ai.html Private use don't have to pay. This is like a junior Invisible Pro. It, too, will make your text invisible. But this one will make your computer take a few extra seconds to boot as compared to Invisible Pro. But it's free.

Both programs have a feature to save your desktop. Both of these programs work quite well at it. But when you add another program that automatically adds an icon to your desktop, in the reboot process, your desktop is going to shake apart because of the new entry. Just move the new icon temporarily into the Quick Launch Tray (or delete it) > RESTORE DESKTOP from the program > Then add the new icon.

But if you mess with graphics programs and constantly change the resolution of your screen, this thing is a boon! It does remember!
